Blue Jackets Ship Adam McQuaid to Boston

COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired a fifth round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft from the Boston Bruins in exchange for the rights to defenseman Adam McQuaid, club Interim General Manager Jim Clark announced today.

McQuaid, 20, collected nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points with 110 penalty minutes and was +7 in 65 games with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League this season. He added 1-5-6 with 24 penalty minutes in 21 playoff games for the Wolves this postseason.

Columbus' second pick, 55th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft, McQuaid has registered 18-58-76 with 340 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +32 in 246 career games, all with Sudbury. In 46 playoff games, he has 1-9-10 with 52 penalty minutes.

Reading around seems like a good pickup for Boston. Solid prospect. Hopefully Mark Stuart will be up in Boston next year, and McQuaid will slide into his spot in Providence. (Although, we do need to sign him first or else he will re-enter the draft).

EDIT: Just learned the Bruin's have indeed signed him.

If this kid is as good as Smerri makes him out to be whats is their 5th round pick like that the CBJ would give this kid up for him?

I am just going by what I read. A lot of CBJ fans arn't to happy and a lot of Bruins fans are. Apparently he refused to sign with CBJ so that's why they wanted to get rid of him.

Personally didn't think I made it seem like he was real good because I have never seen him play.

Hes got size. 6' 4" about 200-205. Will definitly add some more muscle in the future. In the O he played in any situation, PP PK 5-on-5 whatever needed. With Sudbury i would say second line PP and either first or second PK. Plays a fairly physical game but i would expect more for his size and is and underated fighter he just doesn't go often.

In my opinion if someone drafts a player and they refuse to sgn with that team they deserve to rot in the minors for the rest of their career!

I can guarantee you It wasnt that he refused to sign with the Blue Jackets.
I grew up with Adam, and I can say I am very happy with this trade. I doubt the Blue Jackets had any room for hi in either the minors of NHL. I expect they werent going to sign him and put back in the draft, so it was a requested trade (?)-meaning my own thoughts...
My point being, Adam would never refuse to sign. He is not that kind of guy. Bruins fans will be beyond happy with him. Greatest personality you will come by, and one of the hardest working players around.
and agitator, he is actually more around 210. He is undersized by Sudbury. Definitly bigger than 200. Ive been watching him for years. If any Bruins fans has any questions about him, feel free to PM me.

what I meant by that, is you can PM me with a question about his play. Dont PM me about his favorite color or anything about him personally. That is not my business to ship around, even if I did know his favorite color...which I dont.

TO; robdiamondprese????

Can adam drop the gloves', because that physical element(AT ANY POSITION) IS WHAT THE BRUINS DESPERATELY NEED, PLUS HE HAS GOOD SIZE. I was hoping they were after BRANDON SUGDEN, FOR HIS pugilistic skills, but that did not happen!!!!

by no means is he a heavyweight. well, he was never tested by a true heavyweight. He was too valuable on the ice to lose for 5min because of a fight. He playing skills were much more valuable than his fighting skills, which are also good.
if youre looking for a pure fighter, not here. Too good of a complete player.

Because its a privelage to be drafted and if you wanna be an as*hole about it just because you didnt get drafted by the team you wanted you dont deserve to play in the NHL.

Look at the kid the CBJ traded FLA for Nash you could tell instantly the kid didnt want to play for them but he sucked it up like a man and excepteed it!

Blue Jackets trade Islander to Bruins
Defenceman Adam McQuaid is excited over the move

DON MORRISON
The Guardian

Just days after completing his junior hockey eligibility with the Sudbury Wolves, Islander Adam McQuaid is on the move.

The 20-year-old Cornwall native, drafted 55th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2005, was dealt Wednesday to the Boston Bruins.

“I’m pretty excited,” said McQuaid, from Sudbury. “There is a lot of tradition in that organization.”

The defenceman, off a 31-point season with the Ontario Hockey League club, was acquired by the Bruins for a fifth-round selection at the NHL Entry Draft to be held June 22-23 in Columbus.

He learned Tuesday of the deal, which wasn’t made official until Wednesday morning by the Bruins and Blue Jacket interim general manager Jim Clark of Summerside.

“It’s the business side of the sport,” said McQuaid. “I had kind of envisioned myself playing in Columbus . . . It’s a fresh start with Boston and I’m really looking forward to it.”

McQuaid spoke briefly with Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli earlier in the day.

The Bruins were impressed with McQuaid’s development this season.

“He has size, strength, a good hockey sense and he is a good defender,” said Chiarelli, in a statement on the Bruins’ website, which also confirmed they had signed the Islander to a multi-year contract.

“We felt that the draft was thinner than usual in the lower rounds and that this was a good way to get value with a lower-round pick.”

McQuaid finished his junior career with 18 goals and 58 assists in 246 games, all with Sudbury.

The Wolves advanced to the OHL final before bowing out in six games to Memorial Cup-bound Plymouth Whalers.

“It would have been nice to still be playing,” said McQuaid. “The city up here was amazing. The support we had was unbelievable.”

The Wolves entered the post-season as a sixth seed but got on a roll and stayed there.

“We weren’t favoured to win any of the series,” said McQuaid.

“We kind of just believed in ourselves. We took one game at a time and we were able to make a good run.”

The blue-liner expects to leave Sudbury Friday for the Island.

“So many things happened in a short period of time, I have to take some time to sit back and reflect on it,” he said.

“When we got put out there was lots going on here, trying to get the season wrapped up with our banquet, the trade and trying to get a contract.”

He plans on taking the next couple of weeks to relax and “take it all in”.
