Blue Jackets Place Dorsett on IR; Recall Russell

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed forward Derek Dorsett on Injured Reserve and recalled defenseman Kris Russell from the Syracuse Crunch, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson announced tonight.

Dorsett suffered a hand injury in tonight’s game vs. the Phoenix Coyotes and will be sidelined indefinitely. In 12 games with the Jackets this season, he has registered one goal and one assist for two points with a team-leading 63 penalty minutes. He has also tallied 1-5-6 and 35 penalty minutes in seven games with the Crunch. The 21-year-old rookie was Columbus’ ninth pick, 189th overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft.

Russell, 21, has collected 3-5-8 in 14 games with the Crunch this season. He had picked up 0-1-1 in five games with the Blue Jackets prior to being assigned to Syracuse on October 26. Columbus’ third pick, 67th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft, he has recorded 2-9-11 with 14 penalty minutes in 72 career games. Last year, he notched 2-8-10 and 14 penalty minutes in 67 games as a rookie with the Blue Jackets.

Prior to joining the club, Russell was a two-time winner of the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the Western Hockey League’s Defenseman of the Year (2005-06, 2006-07). In 241 career WHL games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, he registered 76-120-196 and 142 penalty minutes from 2003-07. He also helped Canada capture a pair of gold medals at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior championships.

Just when he got called up too, I was looking forward to seeing him fight a lot more, so i'm guessing he has a broken hand?

Sucks for Dorsett, and sucks for us - but if you're going to bust your hand, do it in style in a wicked fight the way he did against Carcillo.

Here's to a speedy and complete recovery!

What's up with all these injuries in fights this season? These guys need to jerk it more often and strengthen up those wrists.

Damn, this news blows. Dorsett really put on a show with Carcillo. It's too bad he got hurt, hopefully he recovers quick and returns to the lineup to give us a few more performances like that.

if an injury in a fight happens, i'd rather hear something about a broken hand then a concussion. Heal up quick Dorsett

Broken finger. That's at least four weeks. Too bad for Dorsett. Hopefully, Columbus will bring him back when he's healthy instead of sending him down.
