Blue Jackets Announce Resignation of Assistant Coach Bob Boughner

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that Bob Boughner has resigned his position as an assistant coach with the National Hockey League club. Boughner, who is the president of the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires, joined the organization in July 2010 after also serving as the Spitfires head coach from 2006-10.

“I want to thank Scott Howson, Scott Arniel and the McConnell family for the opportunity to work with the Blue Jackets last season,” said Boughner. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Columbus and regret that I am not going to be there to see this team continue to develop and accomplish the goals we’ve set for it. This was a very difficult decision, but with my family and business commitments in Windsor it was in our best interest as a family.”

“While I am disappointed that Bob is leaving our staff, I completely understand and support his decision to put his family first,” said Blue Jackets Head Coach Scott Arniel. “He worked extremely hard last season and was a great asset to myself, the coaching staff and our players. For that, I am very thankful and I wish him all the best moving forward.”

Boughner compiled a 166-80-26 record with the Spitfires and led the club to back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in 2009 and 2010. Prior to that, he appeared in 630 NHL games as a defenseman with the Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche from 1995-06.

Hopefully coming to Buffalo as an assistant coach and later or sooner replacing Ruff.

Will be interesting to see where he goes. He was cited as saying he had personal problems to deal with in Windsor.

I think he will do just fine as an NHL coach but if it is family related I can understand that as well.

As much as I'd like to see him move up to a head coaching job in the AHL (I can't see him jumping straight to the show), he could be on his way back to Windsor. Bob Jones and DJ Smith dropped the ball pretty bad this year IMO. They had a talented enough team to do well and yet couldn't find a way to motivate Kassian and mishandled Jack Campbell too. Not to mention Jones getting in trouble with the law in the Soo. They have a young team with a bunch of picks and will probably take a stab at hosting the Mem Cup in three years.

But this guy is the type of coach we all would love. Has talented teams that are ridiculously tough and is a great up and coming coach

I liked him when he played for the sabres. That was a pretty tough team in the mid 90's.

found this article on the reason behind his departure

Quote:
After one season into a threeyear deal with Columbus, Boughner opted to leave the team and return to Windsor to be closer to his family.
Also This

Quote:
That has led to speculation that he will return to the Windsor bench.

"I'm not the type of guy that likes to sit around," Boughner said.

"I have to be hands on, that's for sure, but I don't want to make a rush decision.

"Now that coaching (in the NHL) is off the table, I'll be able to make a decision.
