Florida may have been the only team in the league not just willing, but able to take on that horrendous contract. Makes perfect sense that Tallon takes him back.
This may sound funny, but I think Campbell gets too much flak from the fans. I know the majority of it stems from his ridiculous salary, but I swear, everytime I watched the Hawks - esp when they played the Canucks - and everytime I criticized him, made fun, or talked about how much Hawks fans hated him to whoever was sitting around me, soon after he'd score, or set up a goal, or make someone look foolish with one of those spinarama's of his. Never failed. But I agree with everone else here, moving him and his cap hit was a must, and ensures Sharp will be around for some time to come. Olesz is useless though - he might be even more overpaid than Campbell. A less-talented clone of Michael Frolik, imo - but the win is just getting rid of Campbell's salary, so good day for the Hawks and their fans.

Without Campbell coming back last year, earlier than expected from the Ovie hit, the Hawks do not get past Nashville, let alone play for the cup. His speed and puck handling ability helped to spark the listless Hawks and clear up room for the players to skate. No longer could the Preds just clog the middle, but were forced to play a full ice game, which finally turned into the Hawks favor. Having said that, I do believe that Campbell has out lived his usefulness in Chicago. Part of it stemming from the fans expectations of the $7M man every time he took the ice, which he did not live up to. The other reason is what jkidd posted. Nick Leddy is a player whose time has come. He has learned from Campbell, who he was paired with a lot, and learned well. He could be a real keeper. I think that Campbell will be better off playing in front of a less hostile crowd also. I know that every time I was at the U/C he took the brunt of the fans abuse when things did not go well.

Good points Mags. The anonymity of playing in Florida should be a huge help (and relief) to him. It'll be interesting to see what kind of numbers he will post down there - either way, could be a good influence on their younger blueliners like Kulikov and Gudbranson, just as he was for Leddy.

I understand why Hawks fans are so pumped for this trade (and rightfully so), but the Panthers need to get to the cap floor so taking on Campbell's contract isn't all that bad and I'm pretty sure the length is the same at this point. So pretty much what this boils down to is the Panthers taking on more cap which they need too anyways, so I see this trade as a win-win for both teams. I think Campbell will bounce back without the pressure......

Everyone's over reacting about FLA picking campbell up. They need to hit the cap floor, Campbell is no where near a 7 million dollar player but IMO hes going to surprise a lot of people with his play. No pressure down in FLA is going to help his game big time. Plus its a good pick up in the fact they get a puck moving defense man and in the east campbell's speed will be more of a factor.
* you guys gotta realize no big name free agents want to sign there, so this is prob the best they could come up with in order to get to the cap floor |
