Blackhawks Sign Madden to One-Year Deal
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed two-time Stanley Cup Champion and 10-year National Hockey League center John Madden to a one-year contract.
“John is a proven winner and one of the premier defensive forwards in the game who also has the talent to contribute with timely offense as well,” Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon said. “Adding his experience to our team is an important piece to the puzzle.” Madden, 36, has spent his entire career with the New Jersey Devils, helping the organization reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the last nine seasons. He has recorded 297 points (140G, 157A) in 712 career regular-season games and 41 points (20G, 21A) in 112 playoff contests which includes capturing the Stanley Cup in 2000 and 2003. Last season, Madden registered 16 assists and 23 points in 76 regular-season games before tallying one assist in seven postseason tilts. He reached the 20-goal plateau for the second time in his career and posted a career-high 43 points during the 2007-08 campaign. Madden holds New Jersey’s franchise record with 17 shorthanded goals. The Barrie, Ontario native captured the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2001, given annually to the National Hockey League’s best defensive forward, and was the runner-up for the award in 2003, 2004, and 2008. Madden was originally signed by New Jersey as an undrafted free agent in 1997 following a four-year college career at the University of Michigan where he won a National Championship in 1996. It could be good for you guys. He'll make your PK better, but I dunno what else. He hasn't produced much the last couple years for the Devils. It was time for him to move on.

thats why i said what i did especially at that price. plus we have at least ten restricted free agents to sign and i feel this could hamper that effort alot. we need to re-sign brouwer, versteeg and possibly eager, fraser along with a couple others as well. so idk and the jury is still out in my mind for now.

Pahlsson is gone with Habby and Havlat.
We sign Madden, Hossa, and Kopecky. We do not retain the rights to Greenop, one hell of a young HW. I hope we are not going the Euro-Puss route.

Solid signing for the Hawks, I guess - its only for one year and is a good replacement for Pahlsson.
Funny thing about Madden - I know he's been around for 10 years now, but it doesn't feel that long, and he's already 36 years old. Wonder how much is left in the tank...
