Blackhawks Re-Sign Viktor Stalberg

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with forward Viktor Stalberg on a two-year contract.

Stalberg, 25, registered 12 goals, including three game-winning markers, 12 assists and 43 penalty minutes in 77 regular-season contests during the 2010-11 campaign, his first season with the Blackhawks. He also ranked fourth among club forwards with 102 hits and added one goal and five penalty minutes in seven postseason tilts in his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut.

Acquired from Toronto on June 30, 2010, Stalberg was originally selected by the Maple Leafs in the sixth round (161st overall) of the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The Gothenberg, Sweden, native has tallied 21 goals, 17 assists and 73 penalty minutes in 117 career regular-season games over parts of two NHL seasons with Toronto (2009-10) and Chicago. He also notched 33 points (12G, 21A) in 39 tilts with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies during the 2009-10 season.

I have a different take on Stalberg.

I remember seeing him in the last pre-season game and was impressed by him. He skated very well and was always in and around the action, at both ends of the ice. He got his nose dirty and did some good board work. I was hoping he would stay up.

As for the regular season, although 12 goals and 12 assists aren't terrible, I expected more from him. He did not seem like he was able to finish on a lot of plays. I thought that might have come from pressing to hard. I don't know.

For his size, I would like to see him be more physical. At 6' 3" and 215 pounds, he has the size to be more of a force than what he was. Not fighting necessarily, but just more physical.

I think that he is going to become a very solid player for the Hawks. At 25, I think he is going to improve with age and develop into a very good 2 or 3 line player.

if he gets more physical...the ok. However he has yet to show it.
As ive said before, hes a round peg in a square hole on this team. Better than fourthline minutes, but we have no where else for him.

It'll never happen. There's no extended chipiness in his game.

This training camp is going to be very interesting, due to the overflow of players at the forward position, with some of those players in the AHL making more than Stalberg.

If he doesn't factor in, which could happen, it is easier to trade a player with a signed contract than it is without one, especially if the player is not signed for an outrageous sum of money, which he isn't.

I think he will stay with the Hawks and is going to contribute more than he did last year.

Bieksa's licking his chops as he can't wait to pound him again but will skate to the bench as fast as he can the second Scott hits the ice.
