Avalanche Activate Ian Laperriere, Reassign Wyatt Smith

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has activated forward Ian Laperriere from the injured reserve list. He will be available to play in tonight’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Laperriere has missed the past nine games due to a knee injury he suffered on Nov. 11 vs. Minnesota. The 33-year-old forward has recorded six points (2g/4a) and 31 penalty minutes in 17 games for the Avalanche this season. In 874 career NHL games, Laperriere has registered 284 points (109g/175a) and 1,522 penalty minutes.

In a related move, the Avalanche announced today that it has reassigned forward Wyatt Smith to Lake Erie of the American Hockey League.

Why did it take a third of the season for Quenneville to figure out that Wyatt Smith isn't an NHL-caliber player?

Awesome news. It's great to see Lappy back. The guy hits, fights, agitates, causes scrums, and racks up a ton of PIM's. How can you not like him? Lappy is probably one of my favorite players to watch - because the game really needs guys like him, Eager, and Boll. The Avalanche really didn't have as much spark while he was out. McCormick did a decent job, but I'd rather see Laperriere play. But hopefully all three of Laperriere, McCormick, and Parker will be in the lineup on a regular basis from now on. That would be great and would really make the Avs a lot tougher.

Plus, Laperriere is on my Fantasy Hockey PIM team, so it's nice to get him back. He racks up a ton of penalty minutes so he will make my team a lot better.

I couldn't disagree with your post anymore Wes. For some reason I dislike Ian, his fighting style is annoying and I just find him boring. Possibly I am not watching enough Avs games, but what I do see of Lappy doesn't impress me. Just my opinion.

Well, I actually agree with you there about his fighting style (except I don't dislike him). I was just making a different point in my first post.

You're definitely right - Laperriere isn't a very good fighter and his fights are pretty boring - but I still like him because of the way he agitates, stirs up some things, hits, yaps his mouth, racks up PIM's, and at least he fights a lot. In this day in the NHL, I'll take as many fights as I can get, and that's why Laperriere is good for the game - even if he isn't a great fighter. That's what I was getting at earlier.

So I like Lappy.
