Asham Signs One-Year Deal With Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Arron Asham to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract is worth $700,000 and is for the 2010-11 season.

Asham (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) played with the Philadelphia Flyers the past two seasons. He posted 24 points (10G-14A) and 126 penalty minutes in 72 games in 2009-10. Asham chipped in a career-high four goals and seven points in 23 contests in the playoffs to help Philadelphia win the Eastern Conference title and earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1997.

Asham, who was originally drafted by Montreal in the third round (71st overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, is a 10-year NHL veteran who has played for Montreal, NY Islanders, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The physical forward has played in 648 games in his career, totaling 82 goals, 97 assists, 179 points and 818 penalty minutes. Asham has appeared in 52 playoff games and tallied 13 points (6G-7A) in his career.

The Portage La Prairie, Manitoba native played four years with Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. In 266 career games, he notched 131 goals, 161 assists, 292 points and 602 penalty minutes.

Wow, that sucks.

Good price though, and this makes Pittsburgh a very tough team.

Great signing by the Pens. Another good, tough, physical depth signing that brings a guy that can play well, and elevate his game come playoff time.

Something Ruslan Fedotenko couldn't do and was seemingly living off past glory this past playoff run.

Nice move for the Pens. 700k for Asham seems really good... how can't a guy like that get at least 1.0? 24 points, provides toughness... and he had a good playoffs on top of that.

Great signing for the Pens. Very reasonable price tag as well. He's worth more than that, IMO.

Well this sucks. But at least he's gonna be close to home. Home being Philly. I really wish the Flyers would have resigned him. Best of luck to Arron. Funny part is that he's probably their 4th best winger

Nice pickup by Pittsburgh - I had a feeling Asham was going to stay out east, and still in the Atlantic Division, no less! All needs to do is play with the Rangers and he'll have the sweep....

Reuntied with Godard to provide a pretty impressive 1-2 punch too - great signing by the Pens.

Damn this has to be painful for Flyers fan's and other teams fan's that don't have much if any enforcement...glad he was signed but wasn't thinking by the Pen's. They already have Godard and Rupp...and Asham and Rupp have fought each other more then a few times...will they all play regularly?

Good for Asham. Glad he found a home in the east. Just makes for tougher games and more fights.
