Andy Sutton Suspended Pending Hearing

NEW YORK - Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton has been suspended, pending a hearing Monday, for a check to the head of Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog during NHL Game #138 Friday night at Colorado, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 3:20 of the third period. Sutton received a minor penalty for elbowing.

Sutton will miss Edmonton's game Sunday against St. Louis.

It is an in-person hearing as well, which means he will be gone for at least 5 games.

Not actually. It just means the league has the ability to suspend him for 5 or more games if they choose to do so. They could still decide to go with less of a punishment.

Andy Sutton: Head Shot on Landeskog? 10/28/2011...

The height difference also played a role... but he will get 5 games for that I think

He's still tougher than the entire southeast division

True, but he is also a repeat offender, so he's still getting at least 5.

Dumb hit by Sutton. He had a clear shot at the shoulder and he went for the head instead.

Looked to me like he just timed it wrong - but the fact that he made contact with the head, and his history, means he'll be sitting for a few. I'm going to guess 5.

And the gayness continues.

While skating through open ice, lead with your head and nobody can touch you without getting a penalty and suspension.

When near the boards, turn at the last second so nobody can touch you without getting a penalty and suspension.

No need to look out for yourself anymore. Just play like a dumbf*ck and then let the league clean up your mess.

I would throw you out there so you can show the whole world how to play with your head up. I´m sure someone would knock you on your ass in first 5 seconds.

I love these internet ice hockey mentors. JEEZ
This is no local beer league, it´s the NHL where you have less than a second on each play you make

The knuckleheads on here commenting about guys taking headshots in open ice should be an acceptable practice have no clue about the game. This is a SPORT! It has rules like anything else. The NHL is not trying to stop the tough physical play; the message is to keep players on the ice (not in the hospital) where fans can watch the players play the way the game was meant to be played. Everybody needs to be responsible for their own actions...that is life!!!

The game is too fast and the players are too strong compared to 15-20 years ago to allow hits to the head. I think thats the problem "traditional" fans are having. Big hits that players used to just shake off are now ending careers.

ESPN hasn't done any favors in this regards either. Just like other sports, they are looking for highlights. Huge open ice hits are a big draw, and the over promotion of them has lead to this epidemic.

This whole season has just been horrid to watch due to all these suspensions and everybody talking about Shanny. Every time there is a nice open ice hit they used to say "wow, what a beauty" now first thing they do is show ten replays so they can see if there was any contact to the head. Then comment about how it might have been a clean hit and it will definitely be reviewed by shanny.
We all know that Sutton didn't do it intentionally or with any intent to end someones career but now he is deep shiit with the league, this will not only cut back on open ice hits but any hits. Soon we won't see any hitting if they keep treating the game like this.

Skate with your head down and no one can touch you.
skate facing the boards and no one can touch you.
