Andrew Ference Suspended Three Games for Boarding

NEW YORK – Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference has been suspended for three games without pay for boarding New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh during NHL Game #699 in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 21, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Ference will forfeit $36,486.48. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 1:50 of overtime. A major penalty and game misconduct for charging were assessed on the play.

I don't know about this one. Seems to me like it should be longer, for consistency sake, especially since Ference has been disciplined in the past, and especially because it was such a dangerous play.

intent

The result of the hit was bad; but it really didn't appear that Ference was trying to hit him for the sake of hitting him. Therefore, I thought he would get less than 3 games.

What are you talking about? They won the Stanley Cup last year. The league doesn't "have it out" for anyone.

This is a terrible suspension. This hit wasn't that bad. It was a classic boarding call. There was no intent to injure, there was no hit to the head. Give him the boarding call, end of story. 5 minutes and a game misconduct? Sure. I don't agree, but sure. 3 games? Get the hell out of here Shanahan. We don't need you in the league. You are ruining the game.

What discipline? I fine for flipping off fans? I really don't think that is taken into account here.

For that? Really, you want more than 3 games for that play? I thought Shanaban was bad.

Who are these people and how did they find this site? 15 posts and he's complaining about having posts deleted? That should tell you something right there.

I thought he'd get a game just to teach him a lesson, but 3 games is too much. Plus, from watching the replay and Shanaban's video, the inadvertent clip of their skates is what put McDonagh off-balance; if not for that, Ference probably rides him into the boards trying to go after the puck. Gotta say srehm1 had the right thought that it wasn't as bad as it looked, but for a different reason.
