Anaheim Sends James Wisniewski to the Islanders

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired a third-round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenseman James Wisniewski. Earlier today, Wisniewski signed a one-year contract through the 2010-11 NHL season.

Wisniewski, 26 (2/21/84), appeared in 69 games for the Ducks last season, collecting 3-27=30 points with 56 penalty minutes (PIM). Acquired from Chicago with Petri Kontiola in exchange for Samuel Pahlsson, Logan Stephenson and a conditional selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft on Mar. 4, 2009, Wisniewski has played five NHL seasons with the Ducks and Blackhawks. In 254 career NHL games, the 5-11, 205-pound blueliner has scored 17-80=97 points with a +19 rating and 264 PIM.

4th Period says he signed a one year deal with Anaheim, I guess that was right before he got traded. I like the trade, another guy with a little grit and some offensive upside coming to the east.

Excellent deal for the islanders, this guy plays hard and is a gritty guy who also possesses some decent skill. The Islanders have definitely rounded out their team toughness nicely.

i was just thinking the same thing.. its july 30th and i was starting to get nervous. im very happy with this signing and he brings skills in every area the isles need at D.

doesnt thisd give us 7-8 d-men signed?

8 defenseman. I wonder if they realize you can only play 6 a night.

Wiz, Streit, Gervais, Macdonald, Hillen, Eaton, Jurcina, Martinek

Plus, Kohn on a 2-way.

The Islanders are a disgrace on D, at least Wiz will replace one of these dopes. I'm thinking Martinek may be hitting the road (or Gervais), I mean, it's not like he's made a difference here at all...

Interesting....who wants to bet the Ducks may pick up Witt next?

These leaves Anahiem with what, 3-4 NHL d-men? They must be getting ready to make another move - maybe for Mitchell, or make a trade for Bieksa? But I can't imagine the Ducks going into a new season with a blue line that has just Visnovsky, Lydman, Brookbank, and Mikkelson, there's gotta be something else in the works there....

# GM Garth Snow wanted to bolster D through a trade...feels that Wisniewski brings offense and some needed nastiness

You'd think the Ducks would get more than a conditional third for him..

Well, Garth finally made a move that actually improves the team. The is a bit of logjam on the blueline right now, but given that most of the guys competing for those last spots suck, I guess it'll find some way to work itself out.
