Alexander Ovechkin Suspended Two Games

TORONTO - The National Hockey League announced today that Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin has been suspended for two games, without pay, for a reckless hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell during NHL game #1022, March 14.

The incident occurred at 12:16 of the first period. Ovechkin was assessed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct on the play. Campbell was injured on the play.

Ovechkin, who was suspended for two games on November 30, 2009, now is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits $232,645.40 in salary, based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (193). The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Ovechkin will miss Washington's next two games -- March 16 at Florida and March 18 at Carolina. He will be eligible to return March 20 at Tampa Bay.

Good.

I'm sort of surprised. I didn't think it was too bad of a hit and the league hates to suspend its superstars.

The guy is dirty at times and he has done this before. He needs to be suspended. More importantly, he needs as ass beating.

However, i hope he continues to play physical.

Which is why he probably only got two games, ya know...

Crosby would get a raise from Bettman himself for "playing physical."

This seems more because of the result of the hit rather then the push itself. I think it is careless to push a guy that has all his weight on the inside of his skates, getting ready to take the corner around the net, but it happens all the time and if Campbell jumps up then nobody would be talking suspension. This is one of those times where because of WHO was doing the pushing, it probably hurt OV because it gets more attention.

My mantra is getting old, but I'll keep saying it, that I want the players to deal with "problems" and the NHL to stay the fuk out of the game. They are slowing legislating physical play out of the game and pretty soon we are going to have womens/beer league rules where you can only rub a guy out but can't put your shoulder into them.

He's going to become the next Chris Pronger on our suspension flow chart. ;)

I'm ok with the suspension. I'm always for seeing more severe suspensions on these kinds of hits, but, them taking any action at all is good enough.

I still believe Campbell uses a dart board when handing out suspensions.

OV, who I figured wouldn't get one does and Cooke, who more than deserved one, doesn't.

i dont have a problem with 2 games it was a dirty hit and he has to answer for it. and the caps have proved they can win with out him before.

Time to refer to the chart.

Agreed!!Though I'm not so sure he should have been suspended..

I don´t like this, the Cooke´s hit on Savard seemed much more dangerous to me! The only bad thing here was, that Campbell slipped, if he doesn´t it will be a clean hit.

NHL discipline is a joke... or worse:angry:

skacore 03-15-2010 06:05 PM

Ehh he's had some hits that were more worthy of suspension but I'm sure the severity of Campbell's injury had a lot to do with it
