Alexander Ovechkin Suspended Three Games
NEW YORK - Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has been suspended for three games without pay for a charging incident in which he launched himself to hit Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek during NHL Game #714 in Pittsburgh on Sunday, Jan. 22, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Ovechkin will forfeit $154,677.75. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 4:05 of the second period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

If Z were injured on the play, this would have been a bit longer.

At least, I'm sure that's what will be said (if not already) as to why its not as long as say Andy Suttons.

Cant really argue it. Completely ridiculous though that he gets 3 games and Michalek gets nothing.

I'm shocked he got anything, to be honest. I didn't think Shanaban had the balls.

And I'm surprised that Michalek got nothing, because you can argue his hit was worse and dirtier than Ovechkin's.

He's not classified as a repeat offender. Suspensions have to come within 18 months of each other.

At least he got something which happily surprises me. At least it should quiet most of the debate about the leagues "double standard". At least for now.
