Could someone explain to me what arbitration is and how it works. I have always wondered what it is.

Basically, a 3rd party decides the contract for the player. The team and the player each choose a value they think they're worth and at the end of discussions, the 3rd party chooses either the team's value or the player's. It can lead to some bad blood between organization and player.

Let me see if I get this.

The Bruins offer let say Bergeron 2 Mil
Bergeron wants 3 Mil

Does the third party choose from those two which one is better for him. Or can the third party choose a whole different salary. And what if they both object, is it possible they can go into free agency?

I'm pretty sure in the new CBA, the 3rd party must choose one or the other.

Only the team can walk away from a decision, making the player an UFA.

If you like reading, here's the entire CBA section on arbitration

Bad luck for Buffalo. They're sure gonna pay for their awesome season. With the salary cap, I could see many players who choose arbitration hitting the UFA market when teams walk away from their awarded salaries.

So wait, all of those guys on Buffalo filed? That's horrible luck. I wouldn't mind scooping up a guy like Lydman though if they walk away from him.

I know Brian Gionta was going to file, but I don't see his name there, so maybe hopefully he resigned and it just hasn't made the news yet?? Oh please let that be the case!!!!

Antropov is supposed to file due to the "two-way" part of the deal JFJ offered.

JFJ responded that he might get rid of the two-way in return for a lower offer.

At the back of my mind I kinda thought this might happen. I guess the idea of taking a little less money to stay with a team doesn't apply to those guys, can't say I blame them, it is Buffalo
