tape above wrist?

Just wondering if anyone else noticed and can explain. Rypein vs Janssen , Rypein wins and has tape wraped around his thumb and gets kicked out they call it intention to harm. Likewise Kane vs Cooke, Cooke gets KO'd and Evander Kane has tape around his thumb any penalty call there or ejection? i dont think so. the nhl has to get some consistency especially on rare calls such as this. both had identical tape on their hands.

Rypien got kicked out because Janssen was bloodied and Rypien was throwing punches with the hand that had the tape on it. Kane never threw a punch with the taped hand. It was on his left, which was holding onto Cooke, and he threw with his right, which had nothing on it.
