Sorry Jack, I used a footballer as an example, he's probably the most popular athlete on the planet but Americans don't care much for soccer. He just broke a 30+ year old record for goals scored in a calender year, the guy is amazing but my real point is that with twatter and fartbook, things go viral in minutes because people "follow" a guy like him and have to know what he's doing or saying 24 hours a day, they worship the guy and in the grand scheme of things, he's nobody but we've bult up our idols to the point that they are infallible gods incapable of ever doing wrong and I'm actually pleasantly surprised when they don't get arrested, don't beat up their wife or kids, don't get a dui, don't shoot their girlfriend or mother, don't do drugs, and live a decent life and live up to all the hype.

I'd love to have the money of a pro athlete but all the adulation and hatred wouldn't be worth it, I couldn't take it, I'd focking snap.

Right?? Hes all over sportscenter, the news, the internet, I dont get how you havent heard the name or what Messi has done. I cannot stand soccer but the athleticism and shape those guys are in is unreal to be on that huge field for a 90 minute game.

Of course we go to be "entertained". Why else would you go or watch? To prove that you are "real"?

If they somehow get their collective heads out of their asses.... I won't lie - i'll probably watch.... however I will NOT spend one thin American dime on any NHL/Team related merch, tickets, ANYTHING.

A 40-something game season is complete bull**** anyway. Nothing but an asterisk. A glorified pre-season.
Real is probably the wrong word. There are some differences between fans in NA and Europe, that's for sure. Fans over here are different, you could call them stupid instead of real. Maybe that describes their undestroyable love for their teams better. They just don't quit on it, it's not the entertainemt on the field or ice they are looking for, sometimes the entertainment is the singing, chanting, drumming, screaming or whatever that they love. They are so busy to do that, they sometimes don't even watch the game.
Keep in mind that we have relegation in most leagues and fans keep following their teams...would you follow the Sabres if they would play in the AHL for some years?

I barely follow them in the NHL anymore! If they put a crap product on the ice, I'm not going to support them out of some misguided sense of loyalty.

Shows how much I care. Sportsnet had some breaking news headline on the lockout and I turned on the Cincinnati and Houston game instead. For someone who used to live, eat, and sleep hockey (specifically NHL hockey) that is truly sad...

Nothing has been nor will get done, we have seen this again and again. Just when they're close, someone will find something to cry about and go home.
