How does NBC not know this? The 12min thing on Doug or Dougie tonight...wtf was that? Can you imagine an NFL color guy doing that, he'd be gone the next day.

I think NBC Networks hockey coverage sucks.

Doc Emrick is alright, but then you offset him (and then some) when you have Pierre and Eddie Olczyk whining about "hybrid icing" and giving out misconducts for after the whistle scrums. Literally between them, Mike and Keith at intermission they're always picking at something to make the game softer. Not to mention the constant crying about "staged fights"...it's pathetic really.

I know some posters hate ESPN/ABC, but in all honesty they did a much better job covering hockey. Granted it was a different era, but I never recall the talking heads on there crying about the rough stuff...in fact I think they enjoyed it! From what I remember they also seemed to have good rivalry games televised it always seemed to be Flyers versus either the Pens,Rangers, or Bruins...or Red Wings vs. Avalanche. Not to mention Gary Throne and Bill Clement did a great job of calling games IMO. They didn't need a doofus between the benches telling you where every player and their siblings played junior hockey.

NBC seems schedule always seems like it's trying to generate interest in Southern markets. Nobody wants to see a Hurricanes-Lightning or a Stars-Coyotes nationally televised game. Stick to rivalry games where we might actually get a fight or two.

Hell, even if you didn't like the glowing puck I bet most would agree Fox was better. Plus, they always had a good game on Saturday's.

The seem excited about the fight. Could you imagine the crying from Pierre and Eddie for a penalty?

These networks knew what kind of games people wanted to watch. Notice how almost all the games they aired were big market rivals?

I could go on and on.

Now we get commentators like Pierre and Eddie always crying about rough stuff in context of penalties and suspensions...try and listen to Pierre in this video, instead of enjoying whats going on...he's consumed with why there weren't any penalties.

Oh.....how the media coverage of hockey has pussified since NBC got involved.

I think Olczyk and McGuire are appealing to our increasingly pussified society if you ask me. It was definitely a different era back when ESPN covered the games, back when there weren't nearly as many puzzy ass bitches whining about every little thing. However, ESPN's lack of journalistic integrity is also a major contributor to the pussification of fans, regardless of the sport, with the way they create controversy and sensationalize damn near every story they cover.

I agree, NBC's coverage for the most part sucks. Emericks game calls are the only decent thing. Like Mad Mike between periods also, but ESPN always did a much better job with hockey. Thorne and Clement were top notch, guys like Buccigrass and Levy, and Melrose were great also. Pierre with his useless between the bench info is a total shmuck. Hell, even in the early 90's when the league was on Sports Channel America, the coverage was better.

I kinda like Pierre (more so because he's so damn goofy and enthusiastic and fun to make fun of).

I could do without Eddie Olcyzk. "STOP IT RIGHT THERE! Now I want all of you young players at home to see how Datsyuk got in on the forecheck there!"

Say what you want about Pierre -- his technique, his constant & redundant geography/junior level tidbits, and his utterly faggy voice -- I think i might actually hate Eddie Olcyzk more. Probably because Versus/NHL put him in charge of calling practically every Pittsburgh Penguin game post-coaching tenure with the Pens.

More recently he's pretty much all but excused Sidney Crosby's diving and crying tactics, all the while taking a very labored pause prior to pulling his 'All Star-Players can dive & or embellish' rational out his ass. But the way he talks, its almost as if he views Sid as his adopted hockey son.

And don't get me started on Keith Jones. A ****ty hockey player...a punching bag...an overblown wind bag with a self opinion far grander than the sum of his career.

Say what you want about his career as an enforcer -- Chris Dingman could run circles around Pierre and Keith at doing their jobs. Lightning games might be boring, but when he's between the benches, you actually want to hear what he has to say and contribute to the broadcast experience.

I find that the best solution is to watch at a sports bar or a strip club where there is no sound and don't have to listen to all of these dim bulbs. I think the whole stinking lot of them are terrible and they RUIN the event for me because they are so in love with the sound of their own voices that they just never focking shut up. It's a constant barrage of analisys, opinions, whining, bad mouthing each other, who needs this crap?

I agree that Pierre Maguire needs to go away. Obviously our opinion of the game differs from his but because he has a platform, he gets heard and people think he's an expert. That sucks for us because we are NOT going to get heard.

I think that's why people hate him more than anything, the same way I hate the local dim witted wind bag, Steve Deumig who is on local sports talk radio. I don't think I've ever heard someone more in love with the sound of his own voice since Joe Theisman and since it's HIS SHOW, he cuts people off, talks over them, calls them names, makes fun of them because his is the only opinion that matters. Because of that, I don't listen during his 3 hours of bullsh1t, he ruins it for me.

Anyway, sports could be a lot better but somehow they got it in their heads a long time ago that a sporting event needs constant jabbering about anything and everything, it needs hot females doing sound bites, it needs color commentators to tell us that fighting should be banned or the breakdown of the 1-3-1 system and after a while, it just wears thin.

I'd rather look at titties or talk to a Leah, Ashley, or Tina while watching the game instead of hear those idiots.

Can't argue with ESPN sensationalizing stories, however the hockey analysts they have there aren't nearly as sensitive as the whiners on NBC.

I'm 50/50 on Mad Mike, he's entertaining however he's inconsistent on whether or not he likes fighting and big hit, I don't know if the producers get in his ear...but one day he's calling out Pierre and Keith for being bitches then the next he's whining right along with them.

I love watching old fight videos from the ESPN/ABC era. Those guys called fights and brawls like the ninth inning of a baseball game. Now, it's about trying to cry longer and harder each time a game gets slightly heated. It's no wonder there is so much more crying among hockey fans now. They actually put stock into what the NBC puffballs are saying.

I hate ESPN and I never watch it unless one of my teams is on it, but there's no denying their hockey coverage was much better than NBC is today.

On a side note, I miss the Berube/Tocchet/Richardson days. Those were the last years of the Broad Street Bullies, in my opinion.

Mostly an Assistant Coach. Although he was Head Coach of the Whalers back in the 93-94 season if my memory serves me right.

You seem to have forgotten Darren Pang & Al Morganti who were just as bad and annoying as Pierre.
