he mentions soccer and soccer only. and this is the post you quoted.

Let's make this simple, taking leagues and such out of the question.

If you're at a sports equipment store and your looking to play soccer or ice hockey starting from scratch.

What you need for soccer:
Soccer Ball-30 bucks for a good one

What you need for ice hockey:
Ice Time-(if not playing on a pond ect.)
Ice Skates-60 bucks per person for decent skates
Stick-40 bucks per person

assuming you play without gloves and a helmet......

Damn, tell me what sporting goods store I can buy hockey skates and a stick for $100 bucks and I'm there! My skates alone cost $200 in high school.

When was the last time you priced sticks and skates? Thats like 1980's prices.

For soccer you forgot to add shin guards ($20-$50 per pair) and good cleats ($25-$60).

Yeah those are modest estimations, you could certainly spend much more. But they do exist!

Way to take it out of context. Considering the first thing I quoted from him was about "passion" in soccer. I asked him if he had ever been to a "rep" soccer game. You cannot be this ignorant to think it, the "passion" he was talking about was in reference to house league hockey. If so, please quit while you're ahead.

Again, it costs just as much to play rep soccer as it does rep hockey. Plain & simple.

You do realize that I live in the "hockey" capital of the world, correct? Toronto. So, you would think I have an idea of what I am talking about, since A) my son plays rep hockey & B) he plays rep soccer.

Now, when any of you can say the same, I will be more than willing to have a discussion about it. However since NONE OF YOU do, which is pretty obvious from the discussion so far, then keep assuming and making up whatever it is that you think will help you "win" this conversation.

You'd think common sense would prevail, and you'd believe someone who actually has a child that plays both sports, who lives in the so-called "hockey" capital, and has provided a couple of links just to show how much a "winter" soccer program costs.

Just as I expected.

If you didn't care you wouldn't have bothered in the first place. Thanks for playing.

Got tickets to the Aeros/Ice Hogs game next weekend. Both tickets, club level, 1st row, center ice, and the face value on the tickets is less than $30 a ticket.

Same tickets for a Wild game are over $100 a ticket.

Amazing how little it costs to go to a game when the athletes aren't being paid amounts of money that can bail out an entire continent's economy.

Stay locked out, you greedy pricks. I'll keep supporting the college kids, high school hockey starts up soon, and I'll catch minor league games when I can.

No they just love soccer.

If hockey and soccer had the same pricetag for playing Africans and Dominicans would be playing.

You need an ice rink for one thing. And expensive equipment.

soccer? a ball and a field that mother nature provides.

You live in toronto and are skewed by your own viewpoint. It might cost you the same for both "rep" sports but across the world you cant say the same thing.

Yet to be decided, son.

My interest has dropped significantly in recent years. Not only because the Wild have just been downright painful to watch (from an emotional and success standpoint), but the league in general has been very boring and hard to watch. To the point I created this thread last year. Guys get penalties for phantom things almost nightly, or because a ref "think" a penalty took place rather than seeing it and actually knowing, and outside of a few emotional games a year - from the league as a whole, the emotion level is just not there. Both in terms of fighting, and in terms of just physical games.

But, we'll see. For me, it'll be something to follow during the week and on weekends when boxing isn't dominating my personal headlines.

So what is the point of bringing up Africa (which everyone knows is by far the poorest continent in the world) in regards to hockey & soccer? Really?

Then you dismiss the countries I mentioned.

What is the difference between the countries I mentioned and what you mentioned? 1) the countries I mentioned have money 2) they still choose to play soccer over hockey.

You think there are not soccer academies & rep programs all over the world? You think everywhere it is cheap but Canada? Think again.

Really why argue? I told you and others what it costs for a kid to play both sports. Yet some of you have to try and find a needle somewhere in the haystack to make a point. Why? Let it go. I know what I and many many others pay. It is clear as day.

Now can we move on to more pressing matters, like when will the NHL decide it is time to REALLY negotiate?

But isnt your point that soccer is as expensive as hockey?

this is why I mentioned poor countries. Do you notice they can play soccer just fine there but not hockey?

Hockey is far more expensive then soccer. Everyone but you understands that.

Oh my god, are you kidding me? Really? You pick the poorest continent in the world as an example. And you try and justify what you're saying by using it (Africa?) How many Africans do you think have actually heard of hockey, let alone have a hockey rink or actually play it? Ridiculous.

Hockey is not FAR more expensive. Sorry bud. What is great about this site, is the amount of armchair know-it-all's who profess such great knowledge & wisdom about things they actually have never been involved in & will never be.

EDIT - when you have a child or children doing both, then feel free to tell me the differences in costs.

$2400 for soccer, $2600 for hockey -- pretty close wouldn't you say???????????????

http://www.academysoccer.ca/index.php?link=cost It lists both club cost (which is what my son is on) and academy cost (a rough estimate for both - but this should give you an idea)

http://www.italiansoccertrainingcamps.com/ -- take a peek at what it costs to attend a camp for a week at this soccer club

There are tons out there.
