NHL Cancels Regular Season Games Through December 14th and 2013 All-Star Game

NEW YORK - The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through December 14. The NHL also announced the cancellation of the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio. The cancellations are necessary due to the absence of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

A total of 422 regular-season games -- 34.3 percent of the season -- were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Dec. 14.

"The reality of losing more regular-season games as well as the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend in Columbus is extremely disappointing," said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. "We feel badly for NHL fans and particularly those in Columbus, and we intend to work closely with the Blue Jackets organization to return the NHL All-Star events to Columbus and their fans as quickly as possible."

When the going gets tough, quit. That seems to me the motto of both sides who are not negotiating well. It's startling to read day after day how far apart both sides are. All I want for Christmas is a hockey season.

NHLPA Sucks

Three cheers for organized crime, errrrrr, labor. Boooooooooo! The NHLPA has forgotten that the game isn't about the players - it's about the FANS!

I wish I'm in all of those meetings so I'll know who truly to blame. From here, I would blame the owners but I can't do that without knowing what's going on inside the room and so on. I wish I can find the source but I did read an article saying that NHL has more lockouts since 90's than NBA/MLB/NFL combined. That's pathetic.

I blame both sides. Particularly Buttman and Fear. It's a Mexican standoff ( no offense nick). It's really at the point now that I've given all the f*cks I have to give. I don't want an abbreviated BS asterisk season. Cancel the whole thing and lose even more of the money you are trying to grab onto you dumb ****s. Not only are you losing money, but fans as well. **** you all.

Come on up to Rochester. We got a hockey season here.

I echo the sentiments of Jack and bruiser. Just cancel everything now. All these so called negotiations do is take attention away from the hockey that is being played. We're more likely to see an budget deal in Washington than an NHL season.

So I guess you pay money to watch the owners sit in the luxury box?

Maybe when you grow up, move out of mommies house and get a job you'll think a little differently about the increasingly poor way the workers are treated in this country and obscene amounts of money owners and ceos make.

Spoken like a true blue union homer. There's a reason the auto sector unions had to eat crow and there's a reason the NHLPA has to eat crow now. You can't have the unionized players guaranteed everything all the time and have the owners guaranteed nothing and at risk all the time - that's unbalanced. I knew the second Fehr was voted in that this was going to happen. He doesn't give a **** about hockey, the fans or even the players. All he cares about is negotiating a deal. The deal itself doesn't even have to be logical or fair - as long as he gets what he's asking for. Typical when dealing with unions...

Also, regarding obscene amounts of money - that's what has put the NHL in the predicament it's in now, the obscene amount of money the players are taking in! What a toolbox. Take off your union supplied blinders and realize that 57 percent of league revenues is not fair to the owners!

Do you think it's "fair" that the billionaire owners skirted the rules to sign players to huge contracts that they now want to back out of? Do you not think that if they have a signed contract it's terms should be honored?

I agree with a 50-50 split. The owners take all the financial risk.... but you complain that the players "take in" obscene" amounts of money. Who's fault is that? The owners. The players don't write their own contracts. The owners let the market get too high.

This is good news for the upcoming World Jrs Hockey Championship. Team Canada should be stacked with some NHL quality players.

Ok, the owners are their own worst enemy, I agree. I also agree that the owners should honor current contracts. 50/50 moving forward is something the PA should be happy with. Fact of the matter is this, if the players didn't have such a complete moron leading them we would be watching hockey right now and they would still be making tens of thousands or, in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars per game.

I also think that revenue sharing should cut both ways. Players get 50% of league revenues, why can't the owners get 50% of player endorsement revenues? Some players will make nearly as much, or more, in endorsements than they will make playing the game. That's a lot of money that nobody seems to be talking about...
