NHL Announces 2006-07 All-Star Teams

Crosby, Ovechkin, Lidstrom Garner Milestone First-Team Selections

TORONTO - Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, each of whom earned milestone selections to the First Team, headline the players named to the NHL’s 2006-07 All-Star Teams.

Crosby, 19, is the youngest player named to the First Team since All-Star selections began in 1930-31. The youngest prior recipients were Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr, who were 20 in 1980-81 and 1967-68, respectively.

Ovechkin has earned First Team honors in each of his first two full NHL seasons, the first player to do so since Detroit Red Wings goaltender Terry Sawchuk in 1950-51 and 1951-52.

Lidstrom earned his eighth career berth on the First Team, the most among active defensemen and tied with Bobby Orr for third all-time. Ray Bourque is the all-time leader with 13, followed by Doug Harvey's 10.

Joining Crosby, Ovechkin and Lidstrom on the First Team are goaltender Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, a third-time recipient to go with his three career Second Team selections; the Ottawa Senators' Dany Heatley (right wing), voted to the First Team for the first time after receiving Second Team honors last season; and Anaheim Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer, a First Team member for the third consecutive campaign.

The Second Team features three players making debuts on an NHL All-Star Team: defenseman Dan Boyle and center Vincent Lecavalier of the Tampa Bay Lightning and left wing Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres. They are joined by Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger, (third appearance on the Second Team to go with his one previous First Team selection), Lightning right wing Martin St. Louis (who earned his first career Second Team berth to go with one previous First Team selection) and Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, named to the Second Team for the second time.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

Ummm, I think you're very confused.

This isn't for the All Star Game, it's the All Star Teams. Notice "First team" and "Second Team" are used throughout the article as opposed to "Eastern Conference" and "Western Conference". Also notice that in total only ten players made two teams, as opposed to the 40 or so players named to the all star game. Not to mention this is done at this time every year. I don't know how this confused you, but oh well.

Anyway, I agree with most of the selections but I think Luongo should have been on the first team with Brodeur on the second. Other than that some of the picks are semi-subjective, but I don't take issue with any of them.

I wonder how many of these guys have incentives in their contracts for being selected to these teams...
