Keith Carney Named Wild Captain for December

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough and Head Coach Jacques Lemaire announced today that defenseman Keith Carney will serve as team captain for the month of December. Brian Rolston and Wes Walz will continue to serve as alternate captains.

Carney, 36 (2/3/70), has collected three points (1-2=3) and 22 penalty minutes in 24 games with the Wild this season. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound blueliner appeared in his 900th career NHL contest at Columbus on November 25. The Providence, Rhode Island-native has recorded 203 points (41-162=203), 826 penalty minutes and owns a plus-minus rating of +134 in 901 career games during 16 seasons with Buffalo, Chicago, Phoenix, Anaheim, Vancouver and Minnesota.

The Wild will continue to rotate their team captaincy on a monthly basis this season based on the player who has shown the greatest leadership qualities.

that is the dumbest thing u can do in hockey. Pick a captain and keep him or everybody on the team is goin to question the leadership. This does not work. U also wonder what its goin to do the guys confidence when u take it away from him. Dallas IMO did a stupid thing by takin Modanos C from him and u listen to people like Cherry and other media guys say the same thing. U give a guy the C u let him keep it, until traded or retired or u will have problems all year.

The rotating system does work, and it takes a close locker room to work, as the Wild locker room is. They know who the leaders on the team are. Whether they're the on ice leader, or the locker room leaders, the players and coaches know who they are.

On to the actual item... Carney getting it is kind of a shock IMO. Nick Schultz of all guys should get the C because he has played his ass off on the blue line. He has taken over playing against the other teams top lines, and has dont very well in doing so. I'm glad he has an A, but he deserves more recognition than that.

I really think they should have left it with Rolston.

Is this high school or pro hockey. The expansion era is over. Name a captain once and for all.

you are right on man....i think carney does show leadership qualities....when he was on the ducks as an assistant cap, he was also putting in his 2 cents to the refs, and players respected him.....good move by the wild imo
