Hypothetical: Stanley Cup scenarios

In my research to better understand why and the consequences of the last time the season was cancelled, I discovered that in 2006 the NHL said it might be willing to reward the Stanley cup to a non NHL team if there's another cancelled season. Since it looks like this one will be cancelled, I am wondering then who would then compete for the cup? A team in the AHL? KHL? Or would it be kept as what Lord Stanley's original intent: For it to be rewarded to the best Canadian amateur team?

That's like givng the Super Bowl trophy to a college team. If there's no season no minor league team gets the most prestigious trophy... rather simple.

The major difference being the NFL owns the Lombardi Trophy, while the NHL does not own the Stanley Cup.
