Doan Named Team Canada Captain for World Championship

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Hockey Canada announced today that Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan has been named captain of Team Canada for the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Moscow, Russia. The tournament begins today and runs through May 13.

Doan, 30, is participating in his fourth World Championship. After making his World Championship debut in 1999, he helped lead Canada to a gold medal in 2003 and a silver medal in 2005. The 6-foot-2, 216-pound right wing won the 2004 World Cup of Hockey with Team Canada, scoring the game-winning goal in the final, and played in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

Doan has served as captain for the Coyotes for the past three seasons and was an alternate captain for the team two previous campaigns. Doan led the Coyotes in goals (27), assists (28), and points (55) this season. It marked the third consecutive season that the Halkirk, Alberta native led the Coyotes in scoring.

Doan was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round (7th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He has played his entire NHL career (11 seasons) with the Coyotes/Jets franchise and ranks 3rd in franchise history in games played (803), 5th in goals (199), 5th in assists (273) and 6th in points (472).

Doan is one of four Coyotes’ players participating in tournament along with Keith Ballard (U.S.A.), Zbynek Michalek (Czech Republic), and Niko Kapanen (Finland). Coyotes’ Equipment Manager Stan Wilson and Athletic Therapist Chris Broadhurst will also be on the bench for Team Canada at the World Championship. Barry Smith, who served as an associate coach for the Coyotes the past two seasons, is associate head coach for Team U.S.A.

Doan and Team Canada will face Germany in their first game of the 2007 IIHF World Championship on Saturday.

Congralutions to Doan well deserved.

Not bad for a guy many consider "3rd line" material.

He is actually pretty underrated. A very good combination of power and speed. Not great hands, but decent. And a great guy to boot.

Awesome. Very happy to see this. He seems to get heat because he's not an elite superstar, but the fact of the matter is he's a very good player and very good guy, and this is well deserved.

He is captain material. Not a bad pick. I'm sure "Barnaby-lite" is thrilled if he even remembers all the crap that comes out of his mouth.

Ridiculous. How could an overrated 3rd line guy like Doan be chosen as captain over a 3rd line player like Sean Avery?

Not bad goal totals considering his supporting cast.

And he missed 9 games this past year as well... so all things considered, Doan had a pretty damn good year, IMO.

Doan has been a pretty good player for a long time now really. He hasn't had the best supporting cast either over the years. He's not a great player and not the type of player that's going to make most fans jump out of their seats, but as a whole he's a very good all around player. He can do a little bit of everything and he's always working his ass off which is the most important thing in my opinion.
