I hate to break it to some of you people in here...
I live in Los Angeles, and let me fill you in: while LA is a world class city, a city I can't see myself ever leaving, the Kings fan base here is PUNY compared to that of the Devils. No one gives a good god damn about the Kings in this town. You can hardly get good coverage of the Kings game on any of the 8 nightly 11pm newscasts. LA is Dodgers & Lakers. Maybe a little love for the Clippers. And the fan base for the Kings looks to be about equal as it is for the friggin' soccer team. In NJ everyone is a Devils fan because its the only team that bears the state's name. You can ask any random personon the street in NJ and have a good chance of them knowing if the Devils won the previous night. No one in LA knows if the Kings won. You'd be interrupting a conversation about the Lakers to ask. I like the Kings but this isn't the RedWings or Chicago as far as marquee team for the playoffs. Its more like Columbus when it comes to fan base. |

The truth is that the Rangers have more fans because anyone that has a family with roots in hockey is going to be a Ranger fan since it is passed on from generation to generation. The Devils got here around 1980 so they have a fan base filled with new age fans that are very uneducated in the sport. There is also a lot of inbreeding going on in that fan base. You go to a Rangers game you will see the stars all out to watch the game while if you find yourself in Newark watching a game you may see some idiot like Snookie or The Situation asking why the goalie just went to the bench with a minute left in the game.

Didn't take long for us to see the "we have more fans" and "we get better media coverage" nonsense from the Rags faithful. Pretty embarrassing.
Not everyone has the luxury of being an Original 6 team who has the benefit of playing in the center of manhattan with well over half the stadiums seats owned by companies in the biggest sports city in the world. The Rangers have a larger fanbase? Wow! Thanks for stating what's completely obvious. I'd love to hear how many games some of these so-called diehard Rags fans on here go to. I can almost guarantee that NYR Super Fan Pussadillamil sits at home with his two loser friends whove never been laid, having a pizza party with soda while wearing a Mike Richter jersey and a '94 stanley cup champions hat, talking to each other about how great the Rags are, how they sellout every game and how tough they are on HF.com

The NJ fans try to make a rebuttal but they know they have a McFranchise, they just don't want to admit it. 24th in attendance in a building they just spent a lot of money on to build is pretty bad. Before you make fun of the Lightning and its fan base, they were 13th in attendance, ahead of......wait for it.....the Rangers! Los Angeles!! Boston!!! Just teasin', all 3 of those teams draw 100% and the Lightning is 96% but still, you'd think a team in NJ would do well but it's in Newark. NEWARK! What were they thinking? The owner of the basketball team is moving out of NJ to Brooklyn or something. Hmmm......The governor say good riddance but that's just bluster, it's got to be a big concern that they have a nice arena in a state where people make a lot of money and they can't draw fans for either of their sports franchises. What's wrong there? Anyway, go Rangers. Richards and Fedotenko are former Lightning players who won a cup for us so I don't mind rooting for them and Torts was the coach who won the cup here so I definitely give the Rangers the advantage in experience but NJ is no pushover, I'm just hoping they are overconfident after beating a totally broken down Flyer team that just didn't give a crap.

In reality, the southern half of the state is all Flyers and the northern half has more Rags, so the New Jersey Devils are really just the third most popular team in their own state. Which is unsurprising because, as you said the Rags are an original 6 team that plays in NYC and the Flyers are, well, they're the Flyers. But that doesn't change the fact that the Devils have had the better of the results on the ice compared to both teams over the past 20 years, so while the Devils may have had no choice but to parade their Cups around an empty parking lot, neither of our fan bases can say much about what has happened on the ice for the last couple decades. Nor would it be much fun to attempt to do so, as those fans up there at the Prudential Center are kind and welcoming beyond belief. Truly lovely people. I had only been there for regular season games before so I thought maybe the bad element among Devils fans would come out for a playoff game. Nope, sweet as can be. But I digress... As far as this series is concerned, it's really tough to pick. The Devils put up a total masterclass of a performance against the Flyers last round but the Rangers probably would have done the same as they also had the Flyers figured out. And then there's the Lundqvist factor, and his numbers against Brodeur, etc. But this isn't Lundqvist's territory right now, it's Marty's. This is new to Lundqvist whereas Marty has been there, done that and then some. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Devils in 7. (Sorry Pesa, I flirted with the idea of Rags pom poms but you just can't go against the heart. |

Also, enough with this conspiracy theory "Flyer team that didn't give a crap" nonsense. Talk like that is almost as embarassing as going to a Hooters style restaurant and hitting on the college wait staff that's half your age.
