Brian Rolston Named Wild Captain for January
SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough and Head Coach Jacques Lemaire announced today that forward Brian Rolston will serve as team captain for the month of January. Keith Carney and Wes Walz will serve as alternate captains.
Rolston, 33 (2/21/73), leads the Wild in scoring this season with 36 points (20-16=36) and paces the team with 18 power play points (8-10=18). The 6-foot-2, 211-pound forward notched his 20th goal of the season in Sunday's win over Anaheim to reach the 20-goal plateau for the fifth time in his career. He ranks tied for fifth in the NHL in shots (175) and tied for 11th in goals. The Wild are 10-0-0 when Rolston scores multiple points in a contest this season. The Flint, Michigan-native has collected 547 points (244-303=547) in 857 career NHL games in parts of 12 seasons with New Jersey, Colorado, Boston and Minnesota. The Wild will continue to rotate their team captaincy on a monthly basis this season based on the player who has shown the greatest leadership qualities. This marks the third time this season and fourth time in his tenure with the Wild that Rolston has worn the 'C' (February-2006, October-2006 and November-2006). |

the leader of your team will be the leader no matter if he has a "C" on his jersey or not. i think its a good idea giving players another something to reward them for playing hard and helping the team. Rolston is having a good year but Wes Walz is the true leader of the team and has been for a few years now.

No other team does it, but it has been working for the Wild so why stop? |

Curious, tell me what is working. I could be wrong but I think they've made the playoffs one year in their existence. The expansion era is over. Who was the captain last month when they were on the losing skid. What does it do for that players confidence. I just think it is time to name a permanent captain.

I think the Captain rotating has been working THIS year, they have a decent record, and are at the the top of their division.(road record is horrible) And I think the person wearing the C honestly gets a confidence boost on the ice, just my opinion. The only reason they have only made the playoffs once is because they havnt really had a good team(offense mostly) till this year. I dont know, I could be wrong... |

I agree with the idea that a leader is a leader, but seriously just give someone the "C" and let him keep it, cause for some reason, that piece of fabric means a lot to people, and giving it then taking it away can be discouraging to the players.

It would be discouraging if you got it taken away if you were the captain for a year or two, and got it taken away. When you go into it knowing you will only have it for a month, how is it discouraging to lose it?
I don't mind the rotating captain thing. I wouldn't be mad if they got rid of it either, though. Usually, it's just the same 3 guys rotating around being captain and assistant, so guys like Walz and Rolston are some type of captain for the entire season. |

Everyone on the team knows that Wes is the leader, so moving the "C" around doesnt matter a whole lot IMO.
With that being said, Rolsty deffinately deserves it more than anyone else. I wouldnt mind seeing PMB or Kurtis Foster get the C, as they have been playing very well as of late. |
