Birth of the Super HW...

with the decline of the role of the "enforcer" in the nhl, ive seen alot of people talk about how super hw's will be out of the nhl soon. thats pretty clear, but i'm wondering, when did this trend of "super hw's" start? i never really considered brashear a SHW, but i did consider him the champ. laraque maybe? i'm not sure.

i'm sure this discussion will eventually lead to a weight class argument, so just use your own definition of "super hw". when did they start? who was the first one?

Krzysztof Oliwa, Peter Worrell and Steve McKenna come to mind.

Although I'm never really using the term Superheavyweight, to me the difference between a HW and the SHW comes in terms of playing ability. HW's like Probert, McCarthy, Simon, Brashear could still play the game a bit, others like Baumgartner, Langdon, McSorley, Ray, Domi didn't have the size to be considered more then a HW.

Guys like Dave Brown, Stu Grimson are probably the early superheavyweights, followed by the mentioned guys like Matt Johnson, Steve McKenna, Oliwa, Peter Worrell, Laraque, Boogaard and so on. That guys couldn't play much, had incredible size and did just fight and nothing else. Some or a lot of them weren't even effective in hitting or forechecking, unlike some of "normal" HWs.

I was trying to type my thoughts on this thread last night, typed it up 3 times actually and I couldn't really get it to make any sort of sense in the way I wanted it to, but this is a pretty good description. I don't really use the term 'Super Heavyweight' either, but I think you clarified the difference between HW and SHW pretty well.
