2010 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

TORONTO – Bill Hay, Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors, Jim Gregory and Pat Quinn, Co-Chairmen of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee, announced today that Dino Ciccarelli, Cammi Granato and Angela James have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player Category. In the Builder Category, Jimmy Devellano and the late Daryl “Doc” Seaman was elected. The vote took place today at the annual meeting of the Selection Committee in Toronto.

“The Hockey Hall of Fame is proud to welcome these five hockey legends as Honoured Members,” said Jim Gregory. “Their contributions to the game of hockey are well documented and their election to the Hockey Hall of Fame is richly deserved.”

A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Dino Ciccarelli played four seasons for the London Knights setting a team record for goals with 72 in 1977-78. An undrafted free agent, he made his debut with the Minnesota North Stars in 1980-81, played nine seasons with the Stars, leading the team in scoring five times. Overall, he played 19 NHL seasons with five teams recording 608 goals and 592 assists in 1,232 games played.

“This is a tremendous honour that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” said Ciccarelli. “I really appreciate the support of my coaches, the fans and mostly importantly my family throughout my 19 year career.”

Cammi Granato was ECAC Player of the Year three consecutive seasons from 1991-93, while playing for Providence College. She then played in Canada for the Concordia Stingers, helping that team to three Quebec titles. Granato was also a 15-year member of the U.S. Women’s National Team beginning in 1990 and led Team USA to the gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics.

“I dreamed of being in the NHL my entire life and this certainly makes up for those dreams,” said Granato. “Being amongst the first women to play at college and later at the Olympics, it certainly was worthwhile being a hockey pioneer”.

Toronto native Angela James starred in the 1970’s and early 1980’s in the Central Ontario Women’s League and was the league’s leading scorer for eight seasons and MVP on six occasions. A medalist in 12 National Championships, she was MVP in eight of them. Angela has also won four world championship gold medals (1990, 1992, 1994 and 1997).

“On behalf of everyone in women’s hockey, I am truly honoured,” said James. “As a kid I went to the Hall and was in awe of those who had been inducted. I am delighted to to be able to join them.”

In the Builder Category, long-time Detroit Red Wings executive, Jim Devellano and posthumously a founding owner of the Calgary Flames, Daryl “Doc” Seaman were honoured.

“I’d like to thank the Selection Committee for naming me,” said Devellano. “This game is all about the people and since Lynn Patrick gave me my first break I’ve been fortunate to be associated with great people.”

Angela James (born December 22, 1964) is a Canadian former ice hockey forward who played in the Central Ontario Women's Hockey League (now the National Women's Hockey League) and represented Team Canada internationally. Considered the first superstar of modern women's hockey, James scored 34 points (22g, 12a)[1] in 20 games over four women's world championships,[2] including 11 goals in five games in the inaugural IIHF World Women Championships, held in Ottawa in 1992.[3] In 2008, she, along with Cammi Granato (USA) and Geraldine Heaney (CAN), became the first women to be inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hockey Hall of Fame.[2] James was dubbed the "Wayne Gretzky of women's hockey", and as the daughter of a black father and white mother, she is the only African-Canadian to captain a national hockey team.[4]

Not including Pat Burns is a joke, a disgrace, and a whole bunch of other things. He's definitely going to get in at some point, why not now? He's got one foot out the door, but he's held on for this long, and this would've been a great final honour for him.

Instead, two chicks and Doc Semen get in. Unbelievable.

I don't know if Eric ever gets in. His career numbers are just no good enough. Surprisgly on WIP 610 midday show they reviewed his fellow players during his era and Lindros doesn't come close number wise. it doesn't help that he has zero cups. His one MVP helps a bit, but ultimatley career longevity should hold him back.

Well, I'm not shocked Lindros wasn't included - I think it will be a long, long time before he ever gets a sniff of getting in. Too many detractors and issues with a nomination like that.

But I'm absolutley floored Joe Nieuwendyk isn't getting in this year - absolutley astonished! 3 Stanley Cups in 3 different cities, a Conn Smythe winner, rookie of the year in 1987, 2 50 goal seasons, over 500 career goals, Olympic gold medalist...and as classy a guy that ever played, I thought he'd be a shoe-in for sure!

I mean, good for Ciccarelli, and yes, its good to see women get inducted now as well - but two of them in one year? wtf?

Nieuwendyk should have gotten the nod. But I'm just shocked I'm throwing so much support behind a former Flamer! Not good!

I thought Joe wasn't eligible until next year?

What a joke. An aboslute joke.

Let's not put a dying warrior like Pat Burns, who has won 3 Jack Adams Trophies as well as a Stanley Cup, so that we can have some random dead guy named Doc Seaman and an executive who runs the Red Wings and that gave up on Bob Probert while he was there.

F*cking Doc Seaman is dead. You can add him next year. Pat Burns is going to die soon so this was the only chance for him to see himself get inducted into the Hall of Fame. What a joke.

The list for the players may even be worse.

I don't have a problem with Dino, but I'm sorry if I'm coming off as a sexist or if I just have a really strong bias to the NHL, but how do you not put Joe Nieuwendyk (3 Cups, Conn Smythe, 600+ goals, etc.), Dave Andreychuk (Cup, 600+ goals), Doug Gilmour (Cup, 1000+ points), or Pavel Bure (one of the greatest and most explosive goal scorers ever) before those two women?

The NHL really sh*t the bed on this one. Not having Pat Burns in this is disgusting and a kick in the face to Bruins, Leafs, Devils, and Canadiens fans and organizations.

Zero respect for the selection committee. F Dino. F whoever the Seaman first class is. Burns should have been a lock.

Nope, this year. He retired in December, 2006, so he's past the three year waiting period. I really thought he'd be in for sure!
