Sawyer Hannay to Re-Join Mooseheads; Traded to Tigres

Quote:
Sawyer Hannay may play some games for the Halifax Mooseheads this season after all.

The Mooseheads secured his release from the Austrian pro team Salzburg Red Bull earlier this week and signed him to a QMJHL player card soon after. The finished paperwork means Hannay is now eligible to dress for Halifax games again. Until now, the 20-year-old defenceman had only been practising with the Mooseheads while the team fielded trade offers for him.

“Sawyer started skating with us a couple weeks ago but we really didn’t have any room to play him at that time,” said Halifax general manager Cam Russell. “But that changed when we found out Konrad (Abeltshauser) would miss some time with his (wrist) injury.

“Since we’ve got an injured 20-year-old defenceman it makes sense that we have the option to play Sawyer. He’s been practising with us and now we’ve signed him. We do have some interest from some other teams but if we haven’t gotten any solid offers in the meantime, he’ll be available to play for us.”

No decisions have been made yet on when, or if, Hannay will even get in the lineup. But Russell did concede “there’s a good possibility” he will be in uniform Friday night at home against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

Halifax Mooseheads General Manager Cam Russell announced this morning that twenty year old defenceman Sawyer Hannay has been traded to the Victoriaville Tigres along with the Mooseheads 6th round pick in 2013. In return the Mooseheads will receive Cape Breton's 4th round pick in 2013. Victoriaville acquired Cape Breton's 4th round pick in a previous trade this summer.

Hannay played 160 career games for the Mooseheads in 4 seasons, collecting 15 points and 411 penalty minutes during that span. The 6'4" 202lbs native of Rexton, New Brunswick was a 7th round draft choice of the Vancouver Canucks in 2010.
