QMJHL Hands Down Heavy Suspensions

BOUCHERVILLE, Tuesday, March 25, 2008 – The Disciplinary Committee of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the details surrounding fines and suspensions which were handed out following the incidents that took place during last week-end’s games.

Quebec Remparts goaltender Jonathan Roy is suspended seven games and receives a $500 fine for his assault on the opposing goaltender, Bobby Nadeau, as well as for the inappropriate gestures which he aimed at the crowd at the Georges-Vézina Centre during last Saturday’s game.

Remparts defenseman Maxime Lacroix is suspended for three games after hitting an opposing player while he was still down. His teammate, Marc-Olivier Vallerand, receives a two-game suspension for his role in the melee.

Chicoutimi Saguenéens winger Antoine Roussel receives an automatic one-game suspension for being the instigator in a fight while teammate Charles-Antoine Messier is suspended two games for an assaulting penalty. Moreover, Sebastien Rioux will miss his team’s next six games after he left the penalty box (automatic five-game suspension plus an additional game) to enter the melee.

Shawinigan Cataractes winger Tommy Tremblay is hit with a six-game suspension for a bodycheck he administered to the opposing goaltender during last Saturday night’s game. Teammate Olivier Donais is also suspended one game for a hit to the head while Gatineau Olympiques defenseman Julien Machabee is suspended two games for his involvement in on ongoing fight between two other players.

St. John’s Fog Devils forward Matt Fillier is suspended one game for a hit from behind which happened during the second game of their playoff series versus the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

Saint John Sea Dogs winger Brett Gallant inherits an automatic one-game suspension as well as an additional two games for an aggressor penalty.

The decisions were rendered after reviewing the videotapes of the incidents and consulting all concerned parties. The suspensions are in effect as of today.

In accordance with the QMJHL policy in the matter of disciplinary sanctions, neither the disciplinary committee nor the Commissioner will be available for further comment.

what a crock Ropy got a suspension like that this is only cuz he is Patrick Roys son....how many times in the history of hockey has the goalie gone end to end and taken the other out....did anyone watch it on the news see how they glorified the violence of it but never mentioned the other goalie was at the blueline at one point yapping? In my opinion the other goalie was told to nevermind it by his coach and when Roy went down he didnt defend himself and got his ass rightfully kicked...good on him for being a puffer....and shame on the leaugue for being one sided and not taking the situation into account...

They'll ban fighting for the Quebec teams but what about the teams in the Q from Maine, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI? Those teams can still fight since Quebec governors have no jurisdiction there?

I hate the idea of banning fighting in hockey at any level and these people seem to think it should be banned at all levels. I think that's stupid. I've watched great line brawls at many levels of hockey and I've seen great competition as well. Kids get fired up - they fight, deal with it.
