Jared Cowen Named Spokane Captain

With Jared Cowen returning to the line-up the Spokane Chiefs have reissued the captain's 'C' back to the 19-year-old defenseman. Tyler Johnson, who was named captain of the team last week, will be an alternate captain along with 20-year-old Levko Koper.

"Jared was our captain last year but with him in the NHL at the start of our season we needed a leader from the get-go," Chiefs Head Coach Don Nachbaur said. "Tyler is a great leader in his own right and shows great character by stepping aside for Jared. It was always our expectation that if Jared returned he would remain the captain. That's the way it works in hockey, you don't switch that role.

"We have two great guys to lead our franchise and lead our group," Nachbaur said.

"Jared is a very talented player, a professional and someone who sets a great example every night. Tyler is the same way and it will only benefit our organization to have two players of that caliber leading us."

Agreed. Cowen was a bad captain and marginal d-man last year. He tries to do way too much on the ice. He thinks he is Superman. His post game interviews never sounded like he was a stand up guy.

Johnny's interviews were always about the team and how they could get better and how he wants to help the team get better. Johnny got screwed, unless he didn't want it.

Agreed. It's all politics.

All you have to do is read the paper today and compare Cowen's quotes to Johnson's. The real captain is obvious.
