Hockey's "House of Pain"
![]() When you hear someone speak of "The Chiefs" most North Americans think of the classic 1970s movie Slap Shot. But if you were to go to parts of Quebec, you might hear people bring up something a tad bit different. Maybe something like this:
Whether they were the Laval Chiefs, or whether they were the St-Jean Chiefs -- the the only thing for certain was you could expect some rough stuff. Or, better yet: A Beatdown! Over the years they've had some of the tougher hockey players of this generation walk through their lockerooms. Just to name a few - Patrick Cote, Francois Leroux, Brandon Sugden, Steve Bosse, Garrett Burnett, Nathan Perrott, Louis Bedard, Craig Martin, Mathieu Raby, Kurtis Swanson Jason Rushton, Yuri Moscevsky, Mario Joly, L.P. Charbonneau, Patrick Allard, Cory Holland, Mike Bajurny, Mike Henderson, Mike Degurse, and Jason Renard. To put it all into perspective, from the years of 2005-2009 the Chiefs had over 1000 fights. The highest total in one season being 62, by Kurtis "Cowboy" Swanson. Now...just imagine adding that to the fight numbers of the crazy Quebec Semi-Pro League, where the Laval Chiefs would clear the benches at least 5-15 times a season. And I won't even get started on the PIM totals, my calculator might explode.
Brawls Yes...these events happened fairly frequently. And if these aren't enough for you, just hop onto youtube. You'll probably be on that site for the next hour. ![]()
The result of playing in the Quebec League
If you'd like to purchase a copy of Les Chiefs (The Chiefs), go to this link. Also...and FYI -- VodkaFish (the owner of this site) will get a $$$ percentage. So do it. Great dvd! One of the most famous Chiefs, former NHLer Patrick Cote Cote played over 115 games for the Chiefs, from 2001-07. You could call him the Godfather, almost... ![]()
Steve "The Boss" Bosse vs Jon "Nasty" Mirasty If you were lucky enough to follow this series of fights throughout the 2006-07 season, you were treated to quite possibly some of the most dramatic battles of the post-lockout, boredom, depression & frustration era. Every day leading up to and after these wars, most of us fight fans cruised the message boards, excited to see what the hell happened next between these two. Whether the exchanges were closely contended, all out wars, or utter destructions, they were all worth seeing. Even if you were a Koolaid drinking Mirasty fan like myself, those last few fights just proved how tough and committed “Nasty” Mirasty was to putting on a show, giving the fans what they paid for, and not doing what 90% of Enforcers past & present would do – Turn Steve Bosse down. Or hell, not even dressing for that night's game for that matter. But as fans of the Ice Surface Fisticuffs, these two gave us memories that we can enjoy for years to come. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the greatest toe to toe wars of our time
The rest of the series (Blood, TKOs, KO's, Concussions and all)
The Apex of the Excess Brawling era, and the Beginning of an End. Between the years 2006-2008 the Chiefs brought in almost every tough guy willing to come to the House of Pain. This included the likes of Brandon Sugden, Garrett Burnett, Francois Leroux and Nathan Perrott. While Brandon Sugden played almost 20 games, Garrett Burnett played only 4, racking up 70 PIMS, 7 fights, and one of the longest suspensions of the decade. Garrett's last game played was in the Quebec-based Ligue nord-américaine de hockey (LNAH) on December 17, 2006. While playing for the Summum Chiefs, he was suspended for 36 games for throwing a net at an opposing goalie and for "making a spectacle of himself on the ice during a brawl." ![]() ![]() ![]() Well onto a lighter note -- If you want to view Mirasty vs Sugden: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...6284183055380# If you want to read about Brandon Sugden's time in the league, read this article http://www.hockeyfights.com/articles/212 Well thats about that. Sadly these days the Quebec league is a shell of its former self. No longer are games full of quality fights, emotional rivalries, nor the lavish spending on the importing of tough guys from all across North America. But, at least we'll always have the memories....it was awesome while it lasted. Last edited by Humpzilla; 01-27-2012 at 12:48 PM. |

Great thread Hump. Sweet nostalgia.
Even if my interest in hockey is next to extinct nowdays, i will always look back and feel great about the fact that i got the chance to experience this team in action. I can still see it, Brandon Sugden and the overcrowded penalty box. The blood on the sweaters, the crowd. Wow.

Mirasty was one crazy ****er to keep going back at Bosse and nor covering up, dropped in 4 of 8 fights may have edged one.

I watched a bunch of stuff on the Chiefs a while back, at first it is quite entertaining but after awhile it was really to much. You can only sucker the other players so many times before it becomes childish and you really start to root for the other team. They were some tough bastards but took it to far.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed most of it for the old school effect but like any other novelty, it wares out quickly. Just too much senseless violence. Thanks Hump for all the effort you put into a great post, I appreciate it.

Laval hockey was crazy, I remember their 'house of pain' signs and slogans back in the early to mid 90's in the QMJHL.
