what did we ever find out about if these games are streamed live or not? I found some that cost 5 bucks but are there any free sites?

There are no "free" video streams for the aahl this year. There are free audio streams (radio) broadcasts available (except for Chicago Blaze). You could go to the AAHL website at click on the links on the upper right corner, or check Stream Net Sports for the Radio links of the teams.
