this post might answer your question for now

oh and it seems it's gonna be 2012-13, not 2011-12 as well.
A recent interview i saw with Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez suggested that the most realistic timetable for a "Big Ten" hockey conference would be starting 14-15 season.

Thanks Chilly! How do you keep up so well with College hockey? I'd love to do it but its just hard to do it when you can't see much game action etc.

I know PSU's D1 club team has been a perennial top 10 team in the college club hockey league nationally.

Another school I'm curious about is Liberty University. (Yeah, the Christian school founded by Jerry Fallwell) They have a nice facility and also a top 10 club program too and they play PSU etc. I know they also started a women's team with intentions of meeting the Title IX Act and become an NCAA school. I'm not sure if you follow any club teams but didn't know if you know if they'll bump up soon too. They have a D1, D2, and D3 team I believe. Way back ('06) I was going to go to Liberty and walk on to their D2 team (which they had only the D1 and D2 team at the time). But God had other plans for my life and never went down there. But I know they're always in the club hockey Frozen Four it seems. From what I know, they were one of the more physical teams too.

Just a quick question

If they do a big 10 conference, do they consolodate the WCHA or would they pick up the left overs from the CCHA???? like Lake Superior state and Northern Michagan and a few others or shorten and screw the hell out of the leagues???

who knows...the only thing for sure is that 3 or 4 of the teams in the ccha would drop to division 2 or 3 or even club hockey...

I don't think it'd be possible to move the W to a Big 10 division and combine it with the C. Far too many teams aren't in the Big10, and in the W and C, for this to work.

I'd be opposed to it.

I like things the way they are.

Tonights Michigan-Ohio State game was a blast to watch. I thought it was better hockey than a majority of NHL games in terms of the passion and hitting going on. There were even some near scraps.

I'm definately making it more of a priority for me to follow and watch college hockey. Every game I seem to watch just has more substance. Hopefully when PSU goes NCAA I'll be able to get to a bunch of games and follow them regularly.

Big Ten Update

Big Ten confirms plan to sponsor hockey starting in 2013–14 season

Quote:
The presidents and chancellors must approve sponsoring the sport, and they will get that recommendation forwarded to them in June.

From that article:

Quote:
The addition of a Penn State program for the 2012–13 season will bring the number of Big Ten teams with men’s hockey programs to six. Minnesota and Wisconsin will leave the WCHA, while Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State will leave the CCHA.
They'd better keep the rivalries with UW, UM, UND, UMD, MSU and DU going though. Breaking those traditional rivalries will REALLY piss me off.

Amen.

So, just because Penn State decides to finally field a hockey team, the whole college hockey landscape needs to change? **** that.

I don't care for an expansion team coming in and ruining what is one of my favorite leagues to watch, in the WCHA. The intensity, rivalries, blood wars, and animosity is something this will **** with. And I'm not for this...

If you wanted to see what the WCHA will look in the future perhaps you should have attended the WCHA final five last weekend in Minneapolis....Their were a couple of teams that were not playing because they COULD NOT/DID NOT qualify to make the WCHA final five...Minnesota and Wisconsin were working on their golf games....

Word is that they'll still play each other as non-conference.

Which is ****ing retarded.

It saps the energy and life out a rivalry when you're not in direct standings competition with them anymore, as this would be the case.

The interstate games, yeah, they'll still be there, but it won't have the same feel anymore seeing Duluth and Minnesota go at it, or Minnesota and Mankato or St. Cloud.

But, whatever. It is what it is I guess. The Big 10 is looking for a way to make hockey viable and profitable for the conference and schools... it's just a shame they're doing it at the expense of 50+ years of tradition in the WCHA.

the only part i disagree with the energy wont be there...when bc and bu play in the beanpot or the weenies and spraty play in the GLI the energy is still there (yes there is a trophy involved) but i don't think that'll change the minnesota rivalries or the sioux rivalry with bucky the bitch. just my opinion though as the tradition of the series goes way back and it seems college hockey just continues it along unlike the nhl where it dies (see detoilet-colorado)
