Senators Re-Sign Jared Cowen to Four-Year Contract

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenceman Jared Cowen on a four-year contract.

Cowen, 22, began the 2012-13 season with the Binghamton Senators, recording three assists and two penalty minutes in three games. He underwent surgery on Nov. 17 to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, which sidelined him until his return to action on April 16 when he made his National Hockey League season debut against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Cowen played seven regular-season NHL games in 2012-13, scoring one goal and registering 10 penalty minutes. He also played in each of Ottawa’s 10 playoff games against the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins, recording three assists and 21 penalty minutes.

The 6-5, 230-pound defenceman played in all 82 games during his rookie season with the Senators in 2011-12, scoring five goals while adding 12 assists in addition to recording 56 penalty minutes. He also played in all seven of Ottawa’s quarter-final playoff series contests against the N.Y. Rangers, recording one assist and four penalty minutes.

Cowen was the Senators’ first-round pick (ninth overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft. He has represented Canada on two occasions at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, earning silver medals in Regina and Saskatoon in 2010 as well as in Buffalo, N.Y., in 2011.
