When you look at his career start, he's put up better numbers than
Kris Letang in every category over the same period. That's pretty solid company, and he compares favorably with elite defensemen in every category. Bergevin does a good job of getting his bridge deal and setting precedent for other younger players looking for big money, while Subban gets a decent money deal for 3.75 both years (pro rated this year would be 3.75) and a chance to prove he's worth huge money for a long term deal. This deal keeps Subban an RFA and gives Montreal a chance to clear Kaberle and possibly Gionta's money off their cap when it's time to pay Subban.
Kudos to
Marc Bergevin, he stuck to his guns and didn't cave in to the pressure.
