I don't like not being able to bury guys in the minor leagues. As far as I'm concerned, the player goes through waivers and is still getting paid his NHL salary, just at the AHL level. If no other team wanted the guy, then he shouldn't count against "his" NHL teams salary cap as - essentially - a penalty.
Either way, option 2 sounds best.
