Even if we lived in the fascist, government-controlled, liberty-deprived "utopian society" that Obama fantasizes about, bad things would still happen. That's one of the more unpleasant aspects of life; sometimes, people die.
It's much easier to play on people's emotions and exploit an incident wherein 23 children are killed by a gun-wielding mad man, than one in which 23 children were killed in a bus crash or by a tornado. Nothing for agenda-driven politicians and media propagandists to exploit there.

Actually, Obama fantasizes about a society where super cool libertarians stick to pushing shopping carts at Wal-Mart and leaves intelligent debate to those that still reside in reality.
The reason this debate will never end is because both sides have valid points. There is really no logical reason why so many guns are produced, why they are so easy for bad guys to obtain and why people need semi auto rifles to protect their homes. It is protected by law and by the constitution, so until someone proposes a law banning them and its passed, why bother discussing it?
No one can argue that harsher laws for those that use guns for illegal activities and those who are their guns to be used for illegal activities helps everyone. It shows that the law abiding gun owners are responsible and hopefully it cuts down on gun related crimes.
