Perfect sentence.
I haven't even played any sort of hockey now in over 10 years, but played travel hockey and high school hockey all the way until I graduated high school so I'm not just some window-licker without a clue, but I have never understood fighting and hard checking in open hockey or men's leagues. People seem to forget that professional players get paid to do what they do, and have insurance to cover their injuries. Most people in men's leagues or guys who show up to open hockey are there to just play a game and have some fun and have families and jobs that are more of a priority. You do something stupid in a pick-up game and go into work busted up you risk losing your job,..and of course even getting into more trouble than that.
I never understood the couple of guys who feel the need to go complete retard in a men's league game. Sure, go 110% if you want (people will still think you're a tool, but atleast your not out there skating across the ice to throw a hit or asking people if, "they wanna go?") I remember after high school games we'd stick around for a little bit and socialize, and then laugh at the idiots taking the ice for the 11pm open hockey. You'd have guys who couldn't skate backwards and just trying to learn, or guys who weren't to sure of themselves on their skates...then you'd have beer league Lindros out there throwing hits, skating full speed and getting a little iffy with his stick work and everyone would be wondering wtf. You'd see the men's league games that were fairly organized (but still with people who aren't anything more than a typical player) and you'd see guys chatting it up before the half-drunk ref drops the puck and then they'd go and high-five their buddies on the way off the ice like they were some sort of hero.
This is a fight sight, so I know we're all supposed to be pro-fighting all of the time and I know this topic has come up before, I just never understood it. You summed up my rant in a sentence, but yeah, you're a complete douchebag if you 'goon it up' in open hockey or whatever beer league you play in.
