LP - Yes the NStars/Bruins game is still the record for the NHL.
I talked to Steve Payne a few years back about the game and asked him if he ever saw the game. He didn't, he told me he had been kicked out of the game so early and it was in an era and time when TV's weren't in the locker/training room for him to watch the game. All he could gauge the game on was the number of players retunring to the locker room to be fixed or to get changed after getting tossed. I sent him a copy of the tape, he was very grateful.
