The NHL is not trying to stop the tough physical play; the message is to keep players on the ice (not in the hospital) where fans can watch the players play the way the game was meant to be played. The game is too fast and the players are too strong compared to 15-20 years ago to allow hits to the head. I think thats the problem "traditional" fans are having. Big hits that players used to just shake off are now ending careers.
ESPN hasn't done any favors in this regards either. Just like other sports, they are looking for highlights. Huge open ice hits are a big draw, and the over promotion of them has lead to this epidemic.
