Blue Jackets Re-Sign Tomas Kana to Two-Way Contract

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed center Tomas Kana to a one-year, two-way NHL-American Hockey League contract, General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Kana, 22, was acquired by the Blue Jackets with defenseman Brendan Bell from St. Louis in exchange for forward Pascal Pelletier on December 8, 2009. He registered two assists, two penalty minutes and was +2 in six games with the Blue Jackets in 2009-10. He made his NHL debut against Tampa Bay on March 30 and collected the first points of his NHL career with two assists at Detroit on April 7. He added 15-13-28, 47 penalty minutes and was +2 in 50 games with Syracuse, Columbus’ AHL affiliate, and had 0-6-6, 10 penalty minutes and was +2 in 11 games with Alaska of the East Coast Hockey League.

“Tomas made great strides last season,” Howson said. “We are expecting those improvements to continue into next season.”

A native of Opava, Czech Republic, Kana has collected 16-13-29 and 62 penalty minutes in 68 career AHL games. St. Louis’ third pick, 31st overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft, he played parts of four seasons with HC Vitkovice Steel and Usti n. L. in the Czech League from 2004-08, registering 19-21-40 and 128 penalty minutes in 112 games. His best season was 2006-07 when he picked up 9-7-16 and 54 penalty minutes in 44 games with HC Vitkovice Steel.
