Yes he does play hockey for the fans, whether he likes it or not.
No fans = No revenues = No salary; AND = No NHL
The fans are the consumers. They and they alone pay his salary. The cash may flow through the owner, but it is ultimately the fans who pay every single cent of every single NHL player's salary. The league only exists to please the consumers (the fans) and is only viable so long as the league is generating revenue from the fans. The league would make absolutely no money, not a cent, were it not for fans wanting to watch the game.
