don't underestimate messier, he was a beast, strong as a bull his entire career. but his heart wasn't in fighting after his first few years in the league. he didnt' want to throw with mcsorley, he knew he popped him with a cheap shot and that marty was going to tax his ass for it. he took a few shots, and that was that

I can't believe that no Ranger jumped in to save the Captain, not that I would expect Bruce Driver to drop his gloves.... I don't think anyone ever said Messier was a good fighter, but he played the game like Gordie Howe, (Gordie was a way better fighter), tough and on the edge. No one can over rate him as a big game player because he was the best ALL-TIME, he did what it took to win, and got away with alot.

Oh Cmon, Kudos to Messier? The guy threw a sucker punch, got the livign snot beat out of him, would have been worse but the Linesman acutally jumped into to an active fight to protect Messier!! McSorley trips over the back of the net (probably because he was laughing so hard at Messier) and then Messier stands over McSorley like some kind of triumph?

agreed kutos to messier for his willingness. i think marty fell backwards because he stood on the mesh on the back of the net.

over a decade later, messier is still the one in the record books, and mcsorley only won 2 cups with edmonton thanks mostly to messier and the gretzky. all of you messier-haters on this site deserve to be castrated.

Marty gets the better of Mess in this. Want to talk about over rated? Let's talk about Bobby Clark! ***** on the ice horrible general manager off it!

I don't understand the myth that Messier was some kind of tough guy. He threw a few elbows and liked to use his stick, but how tough is that? I'm looking at his fight card; Valeri Zelepukin?!?! I saw the fight with Kevin Haller and Messier slapped like a girl in that one. Zarley Freakin' Zalapski?!?! But when you hear people talk about him, you'd think he was Rick Tocchet or Wendel Clark or something.

Arguably the most overrated player to ever play the game. Leader my ass, cheap shotting whiny baby is more like it. He is so sucky even Madonna wouldnt have him.
