Date / Time Away / Home Team Away / Home Player
Feb 19, 2004 New York Islanders Eric Cairns
3pd 16:06 New York Rangers Dale Purinton
Purinton and Cairns are in the crease. Cairns is turned and Purinton drops the gloves and cracks Cairns with a big punch just as Cairns is getting his gloves off. Purinton keeps punching as Papineau jumps in, then Snow, then everyone. Cairns takes a moment, regains composure, the crowd gets off of him and he gets up and goes after Purinton while both are being held by the linesmen. Cairns is trying to get at Purinton while Purinton is covering up. Cairns gets some punches in, but nothing much is getting through. While Papineau was really third man in, Snow's tossed for being "third" man in for some reason. Other Penalties: Purinton received an instigator, misconduct and game misconduct; Garth Snow a game misconduct.

Purinton was one of the dirtiest players to ever play hockey. Back when C. Orr was with the B's and in a preseason game he had a fight with Purinton. Purinton was getting pummeled so he stuck his thumb into Orr's eye. Orr missed a bunch of games after that. Dirty player.

Dale Purinton was, is and will always be a piece of garbage. Funny how once Cairns collected himself, Purinton had no trouble turtling rather than standing up and actually fighting like a man. Cairns was never dirty and Purinton for this reason and a complete lack of any positive contribution was never a regular in the NHL. Purinton = spare!

Purinton doesn't get a win for throwing unexpected cheap shots. What a coward. That's an ambush, not a fight. When Purinton had an opportunity to fight Cairns fairly (a week later), the little pu5sy Purinton went down on the ice and turtled.

Didn't Ulf Samuelsson wear the #5 in New York, too? Must be something about that number that sucks all the class out of guys...

Cairns is standing in front of the net and Purinton comes up to him and pops him and then starts throwing some punches while Cairns is down. Justin Papineau and Garth Snow come in and then everyone eventually comes in.

I guess you have to give the win to Purinton even though Cairns never had an opportunity to get his gloves off.

I understand that Cairns can't win because he didn't throw a punch - but he didn't get a chance to! How can you label Purinton the winner when he throws a cheapshot like that.
