Dec 23, 2001 Detroit Red Wings Darren McCarty
2pd 10:32 Chicago Blackhawks Ryan VandenBussche
A fair drop of the gloves along the boards near the benches. Vandy initiates the grab and McCarty lowers his head and grabs on too. Lots of tugging and McCarty pushes Vandy's helmet off. They're near the Wings bench now and McCarty has Ryan's jersey over his head so he lets loose with a left that comes up empty. Vandy, even though blinded, connects a glancing blow off of McCartys head. Darren lands a weak left to the shoulder and then comes under with an uppercut that appears to land flush on Vandenbussche's beak. A follow up left from McCarty lands to the side of the head. Vandy is having a hell of a time with that jersey and is in trouble. A WILD right from McCarty misses everything . Vandy's jersey just gave birth to a brand new head! Bob Probert is cruising nearby... They're both jostling for position. In close now up against the boards. McCarty fires a left that looks like it missed. Probert just cross checked somebody! Darren and Vandy are watching him now! They're done?! Hmmmm. This was kinda weird. Probert then points to the bench and starts yelling and has to be escorted off the ice. Other Penalties: Bob Probert received a roughing and misconduct; VandenBussche an interference.

Dec 23, 2001 Dallas Stars John Erskine
2pd 02:36 Atlanta Thrashers Darcy Hordichuk
They bump into each and just throw the gloves off at the blue line. They each get in about 4-5 rights in their shoulders and helmets. Hordichuk then gets Erskine's sweater over his head and starts throwing away. He probably threw 3-5 shots and Erskine went on one knee (not really because he was getting hit, but because he couldn't see and Hordichuk was pulling him down with his left hand) and threw a couple rights that missed. Erskine then gets up and is able to get his sweater from over his head and it looks like they're ready to chuck knuckles a little while longer but the refs broke it up. Other Penalties: Pat Verbeek received an unsportsmanlike conduct.

Dec 22, 2001 St. Louis Blues Reed Low
2pd 11:13 Florida Panthers Joey Tetarenko
They mutually decide to drop the gloves and have a brief square-off. Low gets the better of the fight early on as he's able to get the right free and land some decent shots. Tetarenko then starts to come on and lands some good rights of his own. But after the short flurry from Tetarenko, Low is able to take control again and gets Tetarenko in a bad position and is able to get the left free and throws some before taking Tetarenko down. Low appeared to have some marks on his face so Tetarenko must have landed some shots but Low controlled this fight and got the better of the shots in. Very good fight with both guys landing some good shots.

Dec 22, 2001 Dallas Stars Steve Gainey
2pd 09:38 Columbus Blue Jackets Kevin Dineen
Dineen throws 3 lefts and misses all 3. Then they decide to show their affection for each other by hugging for awhile and exchange Christmas wish lists. Gainey then tries to get one free and does. Then Dineen throws a big round house left and misses. His momentum takes him to the ice and the fight is over.

Dec 22, 2001 Dallas Stars John Erskine
1pd 03:01 Columbus Blue Jackets Jody Shelley
Shelley gets off a right to start the fight, then Erskine keeps his back bent over while holding Shelley's right. Shelly has Erskine's jersey so they are in pretty tight. Various swings with nothing landing, then Shelly avoids the stalemate and takes a chance by letting go. Both start swinging and they each get in a couple of shots before Erskine gets the takedown.

Dec 22, 2001 Ottawa Senators Mike Fisher
2pd 17:16 New Jersey Devils John Madden
Not much of a fight here, as it's mostly just hugging. Not too many punches were thrown either, but Madden got the WWF-style takedown, as he literally picked up Fisher and slammed him to the ice. Other Penalties: Fisher received an instigator and misconduct.

Dec 22, 2001 Minnesota Wild Jason Marshall
1pd 18:11 Vancouver Canucks Matt Cooke
As the 1st fight started, Marshall goes after Cooke by the Wild net during a scrum. Cooke throws off his gloves and fires about 2 rights that knock Marshall down. He's bloody. A linesman breaks it up as Cooke is on top of Jason. As Marshall gets up, he's able to break away from the linesman and challenge Cooke for round 2. Matt basically held on and ducked his head to avoid getting hit. Marshall landed a couple helmet shots and that was that. As he went to the bench, J.M. pointed to the Canucks bench. Other Penalties: Cooke received a roughing and both players received game misconducts.

Dec 21, 2001 Edmonton Oilers Georges Laraque
1pd 16:24 Chicago Blackhawks Bob Probert
This was Laraque's second fight of the game (and first period). Good long square-off between the two heavyweights. Both guys don't want to be the first to grab on, as the first one who grabs likely will be the first one hit. Finally, Probie gets a hold of Georges and loses his balance. Laraque is able to land a few short lefts, maybe 3 or 4, but they are in too tight so none of the punches do any damage. Probie tries to answer with lefts, but they hit Laraque's back. Probie tries to come over the top with rights, but they hit air. Laraque answers with a left which misses, another left which may have connected, and then some more hugging. The linesmen step in to break up this scrap.

Dec 21, 2001 Edmonton Oilers Georges Laraque
1pd 03:04 Chicago Blackhawks Aaron Downey
After Downey hits Anson Carter, Big Georges goes directly after Aaron and off come the gloves. Laraque tries to get the helmet off of Downey, who's trying to get a good grip on Laraque's left arm. Laraque tries to rip it off his head, but that doesn't work, so he tries to throw a punch, but it misses. Laraque finally gets the helmet off of Downey's head and rains down left after left after left. No contest here as Georges is dominating at this point of the fight. He must've got off about 8-10 lefts at this point. The linesmen look like they are gonna break it up, as one grabs Georges, but the other linesmen doesn't grab Downey, so Downey is able to get off two shots before the other linesman can grab him.

Dec 21, 2001 Washington Capitals Chris Simon
1pd 19:45 Pittsburgh Penguins Dan LaCouture
Simon gives LaCouture a bump after the whistle blows and says something to LaCouture. You could read LaCouture's lips saying "fuck you" and LaCouture drops his gloves immediately and they go. LaCouture hits 3 or 4 quick shots. Simon then gets one shot in and they hold on and fall down. LaCouture was firing speedy punches, but little strength on them.

Dec 21, 2001 Washington Capitals Stephen Peat
1pd 02:22 Pittsburgh Penguins Krzysztof Oliwa
They drop the gloves, shadow for a moment, and then come together with Oliwa getting the better position. He threw five punches with the first being a half uppercut, half straight right to the chin and 2 more off either the helmet or a off the forehead. Peat finally fought off the onslaught and they threw back-and-forth with Peat switching from his right to the left and stuns Oliwa with a solid shot to the face dropping Oliwa and Oliwa gets up, falls again. Peat then lands another decent punch and they get tangled up and they both fall over.

Dec 21, 2001 New York Islanders Eric Cairns
1pd 01:17 New York Rangers Sandy McCarthy
A little after a minute into the game, Mats Lindgren scores. The ensuing faceoff has McCarthy and Cairns both playing their first shift of the game. The puck drops and McCarthy heads straight for Cairns. Cairns gives him a nudge, saying "I do", and the two drop the gloves. Squaring off, they do a moderate 360, Cairns grabs ahold of McCarthy with his left and starts tossing rights. Aiming for the temple, Cairns lands the first three getting face and helmet. A jersey pull and a short right lands. Next right is a half punch that ends in Cairns swiping off McCarthy's helmet. Cairns then shakes off his elbow pad and throws a couple of more rights that land, but a little weaker then the first few. McCarthy is then able to grab one of Cairns' arms, and Cairns has to have both hands holding on to McCarthy for balance. He's slightly hunched over, and McCarthy throws a big right uppercut that misses. A stright right by McCarthy then catches Cairns' face. Cairns has let go with his right hand now and they're trying to swing for position. Cairns then throws an off-balance right that misses. He gets McCarthy's jersey over his head for a moment and throws a quick uppercut, hook, each just grazing McCarthy's head. McCarthy grabs Cairns' arm and pops his head out of his jersey. Cairns then throws another right which goes over McCarthy's head. McCarthy then responds with two stright rights that Cairns dodges. A big right hook by Sandy Mac then flies over the ducking Cairns. Cairns looks like he's about to swing but is losing his balance and takes down McCarthy.
Voted winner: Eric Cairns (93.8%) - Voted rating: 7.3

Dec 21, 2001 Phoenix Coyotes Brad May
1pd 18:50 Anaheim Ducks Kevin Sawyer
Both have a nice long square off near center ice. May starts it off with a left bomb that just misses and he follows up with a couple more lefts. Both guys swing around trading punches. May landed a nice right which connected to the side of Sawyer's face and after that May seemed real tired and Sawyer came back with several punches of his own.

Dec 20, 2001 Los Angeles Kings Felix Potvin
2pd 14:38 Ottawa Senators Jani Hurme
Until I break down the individual fights, here's the brawl description: It all starts when Andre Roy is left behind the play with Felix Potvin, and Roy is kinda tripped by Felix and he gets the gloves up in Potvins face, and pushes him in the face. Potvin then comes back with 2 punches, and then the calvary comes in. Lappy soon entangles himself with Roy. Herperger takes on Modry. Then you see Neil pounding on Eloranta. Mair, seeing the mismatch, comes off the bench to get himself involved with Neil (hello 10-game suspension). Seeing what is going on (Mair making the Sens shorthanded), Hurme comes to jump in and meets Potvin at center ice. Potvin starts by getting the Sens goalie's helmet off. He throws some punches, nothing really landed. They are now by the Sens bench and Hurme can't get his blocker off, so he sticks it into the bench and his teammates take it off for him (that's teamwork baby!). They throw a couple more nothing punches until Potvin throws a haymaker, but misses. They are now broken up, and the brawl is over. Other Penalties: Both players received leaving the crease penalties and game misconducts.
Voted winner: Jani Hurme (54.5%) - Voted rating: 7.0
