Life In A Northern Town Aug 12, 2000 Greg Savoie
August is already here, as a Montrealer there has not been much to be proud of this summer in sports (except for the Als) as the Expos are definitely out of any pennant (or wild card) race they had a chance for and are almost out of town. That brings us to the eternal Habs. In fact one of the biggest events, sporting or otherwise, to happen in Montreal over the past year was the passing of the legendary Maurice "Rocket" Richard.
NHL Increase - Good Or Bad? Aug 11, 2000 Hans Petter Johnsen
Well...There is almost just a month until the NHL kicks off with training-camps, pre-season games etc. The league will increase to 30 teams, which means less "stars" per team and I expect the games to be tougher. Though fighting averagely went down last season, I expect the teams to take better care of their respective key players this upcoming season since they will be the difference in most games.
Is Lindros Worth The Migraine? Aug 3, 2000 James Bagos
Take two aspirin and call me in the morning. At least that's what the Flyers doctors thought of Lindros' situation according to Lindros. As you all know Lindros has gotten knocked silly by opposition defensemen who obviously read the morning papers and hear about the injuries and concussions Eric has suffered the past couple years. After sorting out this situation with you I might need to take a couple of aspirin. Oh well, might as well start at the top.
Return To Glory Jul 31, 2000 Barclay Poole
It's been a long time since Islander fans have had something to truly be excited about. Ever since the Oilers brought the team's dynasty to a screeching halt back in 1984, more downs than ups have plagued an organization once thought to be indestructible. Sure there have been a couple of highlights in the 15 plus years that have elapsed, but let me emphasize the word "couple."
Summer Heat Jul 21, 2000 Alexis Nicgorski
Summer time, it's really the most bizarre time of the year. Think about it. 2 of the 3 summer months are named after 2 former Roman Kings, Julius Caesar (July) and Augusts Caesar (August); you'll find newer programming on ESPN Classics before you find new programming on any other channel; Alexei Yashin is still a Senator, Mark Messier is home with the Rangers, as of today Nomar Garciaparra is batting. 403, the White Sox came out of left field to lead; the weather is on average in the 90's, but we insist on sitting out side in heat and humidity to eat food that was cooked on an open flame.
Canada is Hockey Jul 2, 2000 Barclay Poole
With the completion of the NHL Draft Weekend, the rosters of the Minnesota Wild and the Columbus Blue Jackets are now stocked. Finally, the decade which brought us 9 new expansion franchises is over and teams can get back to building depth. No longer (at least not for a while) will the threat of losing a budding prospect or key veteran because they were not protected, exist. For example, just this year, Colorado was forced into giving up prospect Marc Denis, for a bargain basement price, for fear of losing him in the expansion draft. But the problem with expansion goes far beyond an issue of depth.
The Achilles Heal Meets… May 29, 2000 Alexis Nicgorski
In ancient mythology, there is a tale. A tale of a man, he was held by his heal, and dipped into a liquid. Where this liquid touched, he would be invincible. The liquid touched all of this man, all except the heal he was held by. That heal would be his weakness, his demise.
A Letter To Hollywood May 29, 2000 Alexis Nicgorski
I am an avid move watcher. I have been enjoying the many movies you have produced out there in Hollywood. However, reality, I have come to find out recently, doesn't play out like your many movies. So I ask, what gives? I spend my $7.50. Or in the case of going to an actual game $75. I am referring to the Flyers season ending so abruptly. Let me explain.
America's Youth May 17, 2000 Richard Napolitano
For many years, the National Hockey League has had numerous American standouts. In 1990, Jeremy Roenick made his debut. In 1991, Doug Weight and Tony Amonte, and a year later, Keith Tkachuk was added to an NHL roster. Now, many seasons past, a new harvest of American stars is creating a wave in the National Hockey League.
And This Too Has Passed… May 10, 2000 Alexis Nicgorski
There is an old adage, good things come to those who wait. Philadelphia has waited for 25 years for a cup; Flyers waited for the Devils to slip to gain the number 1 seed; Mark Recchi waited for the puck to start bouncing his way, Boucher took it five minuets at a time; and the fans waited through 5 OT to games to see a patient Keith Primeau win it; the Flyers waited through a 0-2 standing to win the series. The good that comes? A round 3 series against the Devils.
Flyers Playoff Outlook - Round 2 May 1, 2000 Alexis Nicgorski
Well, well, well, if it isn't round two. What have we learned so far in this entire post season? Don't underestimate the underdog. Don't believe me? Well, who advanced? The Flyers beat the Dominator, and the Sharks beat the Blues. The underdog advanced. Taking our lessons, what do we see ahead?
A New NHL Apr 17, 2000 Richard Napolitano
An increasing amount of black players are making their way into the NHL that has for a long time been known for its lack of sympathy. The twenty such players in the NHL this season are evidence of the demographic changes that are taking place in Canada. Due to the massive flow of immigration from the Caribbean over the last 25 years, the black population has increased from .02% to 2% of Canada.
Flyers Playoff Outlook Apr 10, 2000 Alexis Nicgorski
The Flyers have overcome a 15 point deficit that held them in the no. 4 seed behind New Jersey since February, finding out their coach and friend had bone marrow cancer, minor lineup changes and trades, the insanity that is Eric Lindros and Bob Clarke (a discussion I will refrain from having, we don't need another one of those articles) to reach the no. 1 seed in the East.
Fired Up In Tri-State Area Mar 30, 2000 Richard Napolitano
As the curtain falls on another disastrous season in New York, straight across the river, the Devils shake up things in hopes of achieving postseason success. Rangers general manager Neil Smith was finally given his walking papers and was asked to take his head coach John Muckler with him. Assistant coach John Tortorella will coach the Blueshirts for the remainder of the 1999-00 season and the GM spot remains empty for now. Nearby, Devils head coach Robbie Ftorek lasted just short of two seasons before he was fired and replace with his assistant, Larry Robinson.
